Popup occurred after installing recent updates and restarting computer. Security error #2148: SWF file. I don't know what to do. The pop-up keeps appearing and have no idea what I'm suppose to do. Could this have been caused by the IE Flash Player for Windows 8.1 for 64-based Systems KB3087916 that was installed today? The popup has a "dismiss...." or something to that effect, option as well. What do I do?

How unusual, a duff windows update

Hi Juliet
This is for win 8.1 but I think 7 is roughly the same.
Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features\Installed Updates
and click on kb3087916 and then click uninstall.
Some people would say you need to boot windows in safe mode to do this. I would recommend you do this if it makes you feel safer, but this is the problem update - I haven't had the error since.
Windows will keep trying to install this update until hell freezes over, so go into control panel/windows update and select the "Download updates but let me choose" option. Windows will not then automatically install updates that cause problems should then give you the option of unchecking the problem one.

Regards, Shadow.

Had the exact same issue after Tuesday's Updates and I figured KB3087916 was the culprit. Uninstalled it and issue was no longer. First time I have had any issues with a Flash Update but since this is some sort of security update I will likely try to reinstall in a few days and see what happens. I don't have much confidence in any of the MS Updates anymore.:(

Shadowjack, your first post..........welcome to Windows 8 Forum. Thank you so much for the info. I have been searching articles that would address my problem on the internet and read all kinds of stuff but they were all so vague. The hubby said to just get rid of Adobe Flash Player but after I reminded him that he needs it to play his games, he wasn't too keen on that idea. Re your comment about safe mode, how does one do that? I think I'm in safe mode but I can't remember where I read the info. I already have the option to choose the updates I want but I had no idea this update would cause such problems. I guess one should never update Adobe Flash Player. Thanks again for your help.

I think I'll be hiding all Adobe Flash Player's updates after this fiasco.......why does MS do this to us????!

You're not the only one who doesn't have much confidence in updates. I'll really have to read the update info very thoroughly now.

I help administer a network in the education environment. We use WSUS Server infrastructure to push Windows security updates to all of our clients. Yesterday I started to find similar issues as posted in this forum. For Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Server 2012 (Internet Explorer 11) Flash is updated with updates that Microsoft releases. We update our Windows 7 clients with MSI packages that Adobe releases for Flash Active X. We update all of our clients with MSI packages that Adobe releases for Flash NPAPI Plugin.

During my tested I found the problem to only be occurring on Windows 8.X workstations running IE. So I suspected that there was something with the update that Microsoft released for Flash (KB3087916). I manually removed it from a few test VMs I have running and found that the problem no longer appeared to exist when I was running the last version released prior to this 18.0.0.209.

I ended up setting up our WSUS Server to approve for Removal KB3087916 until the issue has been resolved. This is the first post that I have found that helps confirm my suspicion that KB3087916 appears to be broken.

Just my opinion-
I think Microsoft uses customers to test updates instead of doing proper R&D.
I could be wrong.

more info re safe mode

Hi Juliet

tyvm for the welcome.

You don't need to use safe mode as it's now clear that this update is the problem, just uninstall this update and wait for the fixed version as per the post by manadrain.

There is more info about it here if you really want to know: How To Boot Into Windows 8.1 / 8 Safe Mode [Guide] | Redmond Pie

I found your post which confirmed my suspicion which update was to blame and dashed thru the registration so I could leave a reply as you hadn't had one yet. At the time I was trying to post a RFH about a problem with my wifi and this problem was getting in the way, so my reply was a bit hasty.

Hope u have it sorted now and the other half can play his games.

Regards.

Hi, Shadow, sorry for not replying sooner. Your instructions did the trick, no more unwanted, dumb pop-ups. However, the update is still listed in my update history list, should I hide it? Also, I received the same security update (KB3087916) yesterday in control panel. I don't know if it's the one to fix the original problem or not. I did click on the "more information" to read article and it did say that an update would be provided soon, or something to that effect, so I gather the update received yesterday is not the fix. How should I proceed...can I hide it? I wonder if others have received it?

BTW, the hubby was very pleased he could play his games....took a awhile to get him off the computer, though. LOL

Thanks for your help, Shadow.

Hi J
no I just tried reinstalling and had to re-uninstall, so its not fixed yet, and I don't think it will be til the next update issue next Tuesday. Personaaly I haven't hidden it yet but you can if you want. depends whether or not we'll need to install both if a fix comes along.
I'll keep an eye on the link in manadrain's post in case it gets updated and post here if anything new comes up. Just had to take it off mrs s' machine so she can play her facebook games.
Perhaps if you sing your your hubby a song like the one in the telly ad then maybe he'll buy u your own laptop.;)
gl with that

Hi
KB3089023 has appeared which is the fix for this problem (Flash Player runs in debug mode and errors on badly coded flash pages). I installed 3087016 first and then the rest including this one. So far no errors.

I'm probably going to wait until next months (or the next) Flash update and skip these two. Installing a known problem update and then having to follow up with a patch doesn't seem smart to me. MS should have targeted the fix to those that need it, and pulled the problem update from the system. Imo, they should then be offering a single correct update for those that haven't deployed the faulty one.

Hi Shadowjack, you sure are a man of his words. Thanks for posting. I did not check either one of the Flash updates for installing, but they were installed anyway. How did that happen? I wanted to check here first. Now I'm concerned that any updates that I don't have checked will install from now on.......that concerns me. Re hubby, I don't have a good singing voice (hubby always tells me I'm off-key)LOL. I'm glad your wife can now play her games. Have a great weekend, Shadow.
