I just noticed that everytime I hit "check for new updates" a failed update is added to my update history called "Upgrade to Windows 10 Home" (3 so far). It has no KB number. The error number is 80240020. When I click on more info or help it goes to the microsoft "Windows 10 Insider Preview" pages, which I have not joined or had anything to do with.

Searching for the error number 80240020 I get info about a "zune software installation failure". Yikes!

Perhaps this has something to do with the imminent Windows 10 rollout, but for now it is not working very well!

Having the same problem here. It'd be nice if Microsoft would say it's normal. I'm too paranoid for this... hehe

Failed update to Windows 10 Pro.

I am also experiencing this same problem with a number of failed attempts to Update W10 Pro. Although I have successfully obtained other updates for Defender in-between these failures which would appear to confirm that 'Update' is working correctly.
I have ran Troubleshooter as Admin and no change or fault found.
I have also checked to ensure 'services' are running.
It appears I have the Windows Update Windows 10 download package on-board as per reservation distribution. The files occupy a directory on the Drive 'C' labeled as "$Windows~BT
Finally via a gentleman called Andre Da Costa on another Forum states as follows: Windows 10 is being prepped for installation on your computer at this time. It is not ready yet, so you might see some errors, ignore them. The download will be available sometime throughout tomorrow and you will be notified of its availability.
As a result of above I'm taking the advice of the above gentleman and do no more than wait for the next 24 hours or so unless I learn anything to the contrary.
I hope this helps and also proves to be correct - time will tell although it would have been nice for Microsoft to issue a suitable warning.
Regards.
Yorky.
