Solved Cannot open Windows 8.1 activation panel and more...

Hi guys,

I am running a genuine Windows 8.1 when I brought my PC Windows 8 was pre-installed and it automatically updated to 8.1. My warranty was only for 3 months -.-

I really need some help, my troubles started 2 weeks ago when my 8 month old PC started lagging and getting really slow. I tried defragging and virus scanning to no avail.

Last night it BSOD'd with the error message "Page fault in non paged area" and it just kept restarting and I couldn't get it to load windows. In the end I did a refresh, that seemed to work, I was able to get onto Windows, when I checked my PC this morning it had an error message saying "Windows could not be activated please try again later" I tried all the other activation methods listed but they didn't work either.

After trawling the internet for 5 hours and trying to solve the problem, I did a reset, now it won't even let me open the windows activation panel AT ALL I would click it then it would return to the desktop.., I can open everything else in the settings menu just not that! I managed to get an error message from it after booting in safe mode (see image attached) I tried to printscreen but the image quality is poor, I don't know why -.-

Please, please help me I really cannot afford to buy a new Windows and I think have lost my reserve on Windows 10!

The two files are marked as static files in the update. When an advanced user runs the System File Checker Tool (sfc.exe), the files are unintentionally flagged as corrupted. There is no impact or corruption on a device that is running this update, and this issue will be fixed in a later service update.

Thanks for the reply. My pc has been updating all morning( 148 updates) now its saying failure configuring updates undoing changes. I will try to do that when/if I can get it running again.

If a system file is damaged wouldnt the reset have fixed ot?

Read the possible reasons in the quote. Something may have just hiccupped at the wrong time. If nothing helps, back-up your personal files and try a reinstall instead(last resort). You could try the command before updating, it might help there too. The commands(it's 4 separate) is kind of like the Windows 8 version of aspirin

Okay :/ the only problem is, how can I do a clean install without a windows disc?

My PC came with windows 8 already installed and it updated itself to 8.1. I have tried getting it back to windows 8 by doing the reset which is pretty much a clean install but that didnt work it just stayed on 8.1 and I still have the activation problem. Im getting really frustrated with it because I need it for working among other things -.-

If it came with 8 the activation key is embedded in the BIOS. It should activate when connected to the internet.
For getting install media and clean installing see these 2 tutorials:

Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create

Clean Install - Windows 8

You can directly install 8.1 this way and skip 8 so you don't have to go through the pain in the butt of upgrading

Oo i see. When i get it going ill try it out ill update the thread when i get it going im still waiting for it to undo the updates -.-

I ran the CMD programme as you asked but it found no problems. I also tried to reinstall windows but it said I didn't have the correct media drivers. Now I can't even open the Change PC settings programme... So it seems my problem is slowly getting worse but there seems to be no cause.

Any more suggestions?

Are you trying to install through a USB 3.0 port? If you have a USB 2.0 port try that, But first try booting to Windows as normal, let the system fully boot up and make sure you are on line, then place your install media in, open File Explorer, go to the install disk and open it, find and click "setup.exe". This will upgrade/repair install your PC instead of doing a clean install. I would prefer a clean install but also this way you might be able to save some files too.

No I just used a DVD, I downloaded it from the Windows media thingy. I'm just making a Toshiba recovery disc at the moment so I'll try after this and see what happens

Also I have already backed up my files, the important ones anyway. I lost the rest when I did the system reset the other day. This is the strangest and hardest problem I have ever encountered :/

I know this. But, my problem is: I can't open the settings tab to activte windows. I tried running the Command to activate windows, the online activation won't work and activate by phone doesn't load :s

Something I just remembered, Brink has a tutorial on repairing Settings, If the tutorial doesn't do it, read the whole thread through, and maybe something else there will.

I have fixed my problem.

I had to do the following:

1. System restore
2. Load Windows completely
3. Insert windows 8.1 disc (downloaded from Windows media creator)
4. Load disc
5. select install button
6. when prompted: remove disc and select "boot windows normally"
7. removed everything. So basically I reinstalled windows but for some reason, my desktop image is still the same.

Now my windows is reactivated and I don't have to spend more money

You're welcome. You will find that if you use a Microsoft account and sync'd your settings and stuff to OneDrive before, that you should have about the same desktop as before, that's what I love about Windows 8 and 10. Thanks for posting what worked
