KB2976978... again, and again !

I have KB2976978 installed (install dated 18th June 2015). Today this update appeared again as an optional along with KB3065988. Both were installed successfully and PC restarted as requested. I then left things for 20 minutes and did another restart to ensure all files were placed correctly. Left again for 15 minutes and then I run disk clean + system file clean. All OK. I then rebooted for a final time and was presented with a 'Important Updates Are Available' message on the log in screen. Checking Windows Update shows KB2976978 once again available, even though it was successfully installed only an hour or so ago.

Sounds to me like some aberration on the part of Windows Update. I'll wait and see if it disappears from the list tomorrow.

I had 2 to day also.

The KB# is the same but size was different.

KB numbers just say for what it is, but, they are two different updates all together.
Like the daily AV updates for Defender, one KB is for virus definition another is for spyware, and a third is for Defender version itself. Hope this helps:)

Hmmm, that's clear enough. And the size was different you say, suggesting it really is a different version.

I'll think about it.

Looking under installed updates and I see only one entry which is todays. The previous date of 18th June, when this update was first installed and which shows in the normal update history, has no corresponding entry in June 'installed updates'.

And its now asking again. This has to be a rogue update. Offered and installed twice in succession, and now its appeared for a third time.

Sorry for not replying sooner, Mooly - I had a knee replacement last week, am on pain pills and not too sane at this point. However, I had problems with KB2976978 this week installing over and over and over again on my desktop. I finally just "hid" it so Windows Update couldn't find it each time it searched even tho I had not installed it. Screenshot attached of the hidden update - 25mb -hope this helps you.

Yup I received another on and installed, again it was a different size:

This update performs diagnostics on the Windows systems that participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program in order to determine whether compatibility issues may be encountered when the latest Windows operating system is installed. This update will help Microsoft and its partners ensure compatibility for customers who are seeking to install the latest Windows operating system.

It's getting me ready for Windows 10.:D

Hi John, hope the knee settles down... it will be worth it in the end I'm sure.

For curiosity I rolled back to 7th June image and let Windows Update do its thing again. As before, the same two updates are offered. I installed them, ran a disk clean, reboots and so on, and...... no more offerings ! I forced an update check and again, nothing there.

Methinks MS are making all this up as they go along.

My "hidden " update has now disappeared from the hidden list and no further problems showing - think you are correct Mooly , they are making this up as they go. It's probably sorting itself out but not fast enough for those of us who like a little "order" in our life - lol.
