Solved 109 Important Updates

HI I hope someone can help,

I reset my daughters laptop back to factory settings (Dell Inspiron 3521 64 bit) due to numerous problems, all now seem to be resolved. Thanks for advice.

I thought i would update to Windows 8.1 (never installed on this machine before).
I tried downloading from the store but received message saying updates are required before download could proceed.
went to settings>pc changes>updates there was 147 updates there waiting.

A message said we will install these updates as part of schedule maintenance. I'm now down to 109 updates waiting.
my question is why cant the updates all be installed straight away (please excuse my ignorance) there must be a simple answer. I have set the updates to automatic.

First of all, the updater might stop downloading before all are downloaded, because some must be installed,

In this case disconnect from internet and close windows update,
Reopen
Look for the install button(while still disconnected) let what you have install,
Then a reboot will be required,
Reopen Windows update and download what you can,
Repeat until all are installed

Or you could have just downloaded Windows 8.1 and clean installed.

When you say you went to the "Store" what does that mean? Are you not going to Control Panel>Windows Updates?

I always go through the Control Panel to "Windows Updates" then click on the "Check for Updates", after Windows checks what you have/need it provides a list. You pick the ones you want (like all the Important updates, but maybe not all the Optional). When you click Ok windows will download them and install.

After that completes (and usually with a restart) you would go back and recheck for Updates, because sometimes other updates become available based on what you've already (just) installed.

PS - I'm not a computer professional, but this method has always worked for me.

There's no reason they can't be installed right away, you just have to do it manually. The message was just informing you that it would be done according to the schedule, but you can safely install them yourself by choosing install now.

To go from 8 to 8.1 you need to go through windows store.
