Solved Unable to See Icon in Taskbar to Reserve Windows 10

I have two Windows 8.1 PC’s, a laptop and a desktop (both similar setups), however the icon in the taskbar that allows you to reserve Windows 10 is only visible on the laptop. The icon is not appearing on the desktop.

According to the Windows 10 Q&A, it lists one possible cause as“Your device is eligible however, we are still working on updates that may improve your device’s experience, like getting a new driver.”

Untitled-2.jpg

My current feeling at the moment is that although the desktop meets the requirements, this is where the problem lies, and is why the icon isn’t appearing. So, although this is the most likely cause, I thought I’d post here in case someone with the same issue finds some other solution. There’s a thread on the Microsoft Community site HERE as well, which suggests pasting some text into Notepad and running it, but that doesn’t resolve anything, just loops.

With the exception of Silverlight and Skype Desktop updates (which are hidden), all Windows updates are installed and up to date as of today.

%SystemRoot%\GWX\GWXConfigManager.exe is whitelisted in my firewall and able to freely make outbound connections. No other applications have requested outbound connections.

In Windows Event Viewer, under Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > GWX-Ins, the following are logged when it runs and as you can see it lists “pre-req for config/content failed”, which presumably where it’s failing the compatibility test:

Information message: GWX Main: Launched by task
Information message: GWX Main: Launched for tray startup
Information message: GWX CompatLib: Markers read successfully
Information message: Download pre-req for config/content failed
Information message: GWX App: Current calculated phase 'None' is not configured to run tray app. Exiting.

I don't get why Microsoft doesn't just let GWX run and then give details on why exactly it's failing. As it is, I don't know whether to start playing around in more depth and risk messing it up, or just wait to see if it resolves itself.

The post by 'Yaqub K' (Microsoft Support Engineer) that is marked as answer at the below link has now been updated.

"Updated (6/1/15) with an improved script and instructions, and added troubleshooting steps if the script fails."

Link: I want to reserve my free copy of Windows 10, but I don

After trying the new script, it has resolved my issue and the 'Reserve Windows 10' icon is now visible on my desktop machine as well. Therefore, if you tried the script earlier and it didn't work, go through the instructions from the start again, as they've now been modified.

Going by your description, it sounds like you're clicking on the ReserveWin10.cmd file to run it directly, rather than running it from the Command Prompt window.

Command Prompt needs to run elevated, therefore if you're doing it this way, right-click on ReserveWin10.cmd and select 'Run as Administrator'.

I also ran that cmd file as "admin" on my w8.1 laptop with ALL updates, the first time it did the same thing just run real fast and quit, did it 2 more times, the 3rd time it just got into some sort of loop, I ended up shutting down the laptop. booted up this morning, took a couple times, something must have hung up doing this thing, after having to use the power button on/off to re start I finally got it booted after the 2nd try, still no icon , giving up on this thing.

I also had some sort of glitch when w8.1 came out, I couldn't do the update from that store thing either, had to go find a ISO for W8.1 to install manually, which it worked but had to use some different "install" key first to get it installed, than used my retail W8 pro key to activate the thing. So maybe this will be the same deal.

I assume I'll just get hold of the ISO (if MS puts one out) and go from there manually, I just need to know if my retail w8 pro key will activate W10.

Yes, It is better to avoid all this mess. Even I have the same question, can we directly use windows 8 key later for activation(Assuming we use a default key during installation and activate later using windows 8 key)

Found a way to get it to show up

Go to C:/ or your OS drive...and search for GWX file... it is present in the folder C:/Windows/WinSXS/wow64_microsoft-windows-gwx_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.17813_none_abd5ff8f5e617f0d/GWX

Run the GWX application...and you should be good 2 go..

Also after clicking I checked the section on issues, seems only thing it said for me was that the Windows media would be uninstalled, its no longer in 10, and I needed to reinstall any language packs again, both are non issues, I hardly ever used WM since I had it, and only have one other language pack installed that I hardly use, everything else was "good to go". all apps and settings, so it will keep ALL programs as it did when going from 7 to 8 on this laptop. Which is good cause I have a crap load of programs with no SN's to reinstall them.

I'm assuming that this will be the same type of D/L that 8.1 was, that put this ESD folder in Windows, and you could use that to convert it to an ISO, which you than could burn as a setup disk, or use a USB stick. Either way I still hope MS puts out a formal ISO and lets the burned setup install with my W8.1 Pro retail key. (Lots of imaging going to be going on that day)

I did that also, but did not work
I think it is not mandatory to reserve 10 for upgrading the os rite?

yup that's right, I haven't reserved anything yet either, just wanted to know why the thing wasn't working. I'd rather have the ISO from MS to start with,, and just burn my own install disk. I just need to find out if my W8 Pro retail key will activate the thing. I can't say why your not getting it to work after clicking that exe file, as soon as I clicked it to run it , the icon showed up. Maybe you need to reboot after , I dono, but this was going to be my last resort to even bother with it., right now i just set it to show only notifications, so its not showing unless I want to see it lol.

hmm well than I'm not sure what else to say either, look in your hidden download tab, maybe you have something sitting there that didn't D/L. Other than that I don't know at this point.

The CMD file didn't work for me, but finding that GWX.exe and running it did, try right clicking that file and run as ADMIN.

I would think if that file was there it should mean MS figures your system can do the upgrade.

Also look through your list of installed updates, and see if any "failed", and didn't re update, there may be one that needs to be re D?L, just another thought.

well than homes, all I can say is just chill and wait for the ISO, than burn a setup disk and run it and see if it either installs with your key you now have or activates after install with your key, or it may just install and activate just using your laptop imbedded key, as some have said.

Other than that I wouldn't worry about it, as long as you have 8.1 its upgradeable for a year for free anyway, Like I said I was going to do the same thing had that GWX file thing not put the icon in my task bar either.

Mine is not an embedded key. I purchased windows 8 retail version from MS store. So I should be able to use that.

after trying all methods without solution. Disconnect the computer from the Internet and run the gwx.exe (C: \ Windows \ System32 \ GWX \ gwx.exe) The icon appeared instantly.
I opened the program made the compatibility check and gave 0 errors. Then Restart the computer (just in case) and in so doing the notification icon and is loaded at startup automatically. Then I could make a reservation.
Sorry for my bad english
I hope that works for those who are seeking for a solution
