The seller may not have created a restore partition - so to restore you system you must insert the windows 8 Pro setup media..
To update to windows 8.1 through the windows store - there are certain windows 8 updates that have to be installed first to allow the win8.1 upgrade..

Or you could download and create windows 8.1 Pro setup media > Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help
Then run the setup.exe from within windows 8 to upgrade to 8.1

Pro is installed, the question is, is it the Volume license edition? If it is, that may be why it won't upgrade to 8.1 through the Windows Store. One way around all this is to go back to the original version installed at the factory. You can download Windows 8.1 Single language install media here, Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help . That install media will read and use your Embedded OEM key that is in your BIOS, even Windows 8.0 keys. This will get you back to a legally activated OS and no having to upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1, you just go right to 8.1.
option 5 here, http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/27129-product-key-find-windows-8-a.html, should list your OEM key and the pro key currently in use, if you want to record it before doing anything. You don't need to know what the OEM key is, just that it does exist. If you think you might want to try installing Pro, write that key down too.

If you click the blue "view details of windows activation on the system screen it may give you more info to help you sort out what's installed.

I don't know what that means? Doesn't sound good though? What it lists for product name, is going to match the key listed as "installed key", not the one listed as OEM key. It will tell you what version is installed, what key its using, and what your OEM key is, if there is one. If the installed key is identical to the OEM key listed, then the product name is what your OEM key is for, but only if the two keys are identical.

Why would the seller do that if it has a COA sticker on it? Unless its a fake sticker and it doesn't have an embedded key for windows 8?

KMS is a Key Management Server. It's used for corporate system activation. A company can do it in house if they want. It's not something you would use on a consumer OS. With KMS it has to reactivate every so many days. to do that it has to connect to a KMS server. If it can't connect, you'll get a Windows is not activated message. if the seller used his work KMS server to activate your install it will likely time out at some point and fail activation. Even if it doesn't its not legal. You likely have 8.0 Pro Volume license installed. That's also why it won't upgrade online, VL editions won't. At least I think they won't.
