Getting Prepared for Windows 10?

Yesterday, one of my desktops offered Windows Update KB2976978, Compatibility update for Windows 8.1 and Windows 8. This pc was purchased with Windows 8 on it and upgraded to Windows 8.1. KB2976978 installed without any problem.

Compatibility update for Windows 8.1 and Windows 8

My other desktop started out as a Windows 7, was upgraded to Windows 8, then Windows 8.1 and already had that update installed, back on August 18, 2014. I figure it was probably installed to make it compatible with Windows 8 at that time.

Is this new offering of KB2976978 possibly getting pc's ready for Windows 10 installation?

Yes it is, MS is promising free updates to W10 once it's out. I wouldn't do it, there's other ways to try W10Tp, much safer ways too. Just hide the sucker till time comes.

If it's a Windows update, I say why not. I always install all of the Windows Updates. I rarely experience problems doing it this way.

I'm not about to try W10 Preview, however, might this update may be needed when a stable version of Windows 10 becomes available to everyone as I understand this Summer?

I'm on build 9926 and it works like a charm here. I couldn't update to build 10041, but I don't care that much (error 0x80246017). As far as I could read on TenForums it's buggier than 9926... So let's wait to see !

If you hide it now they will not bother you any more till time comes and besides, they might change it any time.

Yes, the update will still be needed just to check your system for compatibility;

Compatibility update for Windows 8.1 and Windows 8
