I'm getting ready to do a clean install with the latest W8.1 disk image from MS and I want to download the standalone update packs and install offline. Of the 3 update rollups that have been released do you know which ones I need to get for current W8,1? I've already got update 3 but do I need the other 2?

I would think you do, not all updates address same issues.

After installing, should I check the prerequisites (update 3 has some) for each Rollup, install them, then put it through the normal MS update process to fill in the gaps? I don't want to hang around more than necessary because downloading and updating them all normally is a pain, as I'm sure you know. I did Update 3 off-line on the current setup and it was a doddle even though it was 775MB. I've always got them as well.

Yeah, I know, installing updates in large batches can be a pain and takes long time. Problem with updating from roll-ups is that you will get all updates, important, recommended and optional which may install unwanted drivers too (which did make me a lot of problems). On the other hand, there were some updates to other updates so starting from first and going in order may be best. If all goes right, you can let normal update do what rollups might have missed. Important updates don't need reviewing but other ones I review all the times.
Another option is to set updates to Notify Only and than let WU download and install only few at a time. That way you are in better control and can see results and possible problems right away and spare you from lengthy retries.

I didn't think about the unnecessary updates that I'll install using off-line media. I'm only going to do this once for my basic image so I might as well bite the bullet and hand-pick the updates as they come. My 'shortcut' might turn out to be a long one in the end So I'm not going to take the risk. Thanks Mike.
