What is my laptop installing?

So earlier hp support assistant said I had some stuff I needed to update so I updated the stuff then I restarted my laptop so the updates would take affect, before it restarted it said installing 1 of 84 updates. There was only a total of 68 windows updates that needed installing, 64 important and 4 optional, what is the extra 20 updates? It got done installing those so I downloaded and installed the 4 optional updates and when it got to the installing part it installed the 4 then it kept going all the way to installing update 20 of 4. What is my laptop installing? Then it said "some updates were not installed 4 optional updates selected" it gave me error code 80248007

I don't have an answer but personally don't trust or use those OEM update installers. I check the manufacturer site regularly and decide for myself if there is anything I want to install.

Do you still have bloatware installed that came with the laptop? It could be trying to update that stuff.

Nice way of saying the junk software that often comes pre-installed on many computers these days. It is why many do a clean install as soon as they get one. Mine came with a lot of cr*pware, another name for it.

Go to Control Panel and open up Windows update. Then click the "View update history" to see what Microsoft updates were installed.

HP typically preinstalls a bunch of "support" apps on their PCs. While some of these can be useful (like camera apps), the HP support assistant (or whatever they call it these days) can be a real pain!

Additionally, some OEMs install limited time apps (e.g., 60 day version of Office), that will expire on you -- in the hopes that you'll get "hooked" using them and buy the full feature replacements.

They all do it. My ASUS laptop was loaded with junk I'd never use. I spent an hour or more uninstalling it. Trial software I would not buy, games only a young child would play, support programs that didn't really do much of anything other than to annoy me with useless prompts, etc. A lot of this bloat software will call home every time you boot up and slow your PC down while it checks for newer version of itself. My wife's Acer laptop was the same way.
