Hi everyone, my first post, hope you can help before this PC learns how to fly ;)

I have a few updates outstanding on my Win8 PC but they just refuse to install. When I restart it gets to 35% then fails and reverts back.

Here's the devils:

  • I uninstalled AVG and replaced with Kaspersky and SuperAntiSpyware - found 3 baddies but made no difference
  • I let MS Support guy remote use my PC, he said it was slowing down and I need to pay MS for sone antivirus to fix my PC (see the full conversation if you're interested at 'Untitled Post' | TextUploader.com
  • I thought about a Win8 Refresh, it told me to put my disc in, I did that and it said the disc isnt valid (I tried both versions). I bought Win8 from MS so I dunno whats up with it
  • I tried deleting the Update files and restarting and checking again for updates, no difference

Here's the error sheet:

Tried to install one at a time, no good, I choose an update, click 'Install' and it jumps straight to a fail screen:

As for Win8.1 I've heard it's even worse than this crap so I wont be updating..not that I could anyway!

Windows 8.1 is a vast improvement over Windows 8. Whoever told you that did not have their facts straight.

The error message you are getting is that Windows is busy installing updates. Reboot the computer and try one at a time.

Wish I had good news for you, but I don't. I ran into much the same problems and scoured these forums looking for what others had done (who had run into the same problems). I tried everything they did: ran windows update repair -- more than once -- accomplished nothing. Downloaded the updates individually, tried them one at a time -- no better. Tried doing the updates in a different order -- no better.

The ONLY thing that worked for me was restoring my desktop from an image backup I had made two weeks earlier. When I then reran the updates, they all worked first time.

Since the recent rash of Update failures, I have had to rely on image restores to solve "problems" that faulty updates have caused.

Sorry to hear that.

You should look into completely resetting Windows Update. I don't know how to do that, but there may be a tutorial here about that, or you could Google for it. That (supposedly) wipes out ALL the updates and you start fresh.
