Windows Updates (Defender definitions) Not Downloading

I am using Windows 8 not 8.1

A few days ago I shut down my computer. I didn't notice that it never actually turned off like usual until the next day. I had to hold the power button to turn it off. It started back up that day without any apparent issues and Windows Updates and Defender definitions were being downloaded and installed normally. I am not sure if that is relevant but I wanted to include all info I could think of.

The following day Windows Update brought up an error when trying to download the newest definitions (I have WU set to check but notify me before automatically installing which is why I manually install Defender definitions via WU daily). The WU error code is listed as 80070002 but event viewer shows it as 0x80070643. WU appears to be able to search and find the latest definitions, as the version numbers have changed over time, and completes downloading them but gets the error when trying to install them.

Trying to manually install them via the Defender program does the same but just says it fails due to connection issues (no other connection issues are present). I can manually download the 100 MB+ file direct from Microsoft and update them that way without issue.

Things I have tried to troubleshoot.

- System restore to a date about a week before this problem occurred. No change in being able to download Defender definitions via WU or Defender itself. WU did find the IE Flash update from the 26th and was able to install that with no problems though which leads me to believe it is something to do with being able to install Defender definitions.

- sfc /scannow (good). Multiples times. Before and after other tried things below.

- Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth (good). Multiples times. Before and after other tried things below.

- Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth (good). Multiples times. Before and after other tried things below.

- Manually deleting the two Datastore and Download files in SoftwareDsitribution. Done multiples times. Before and after other tried things.

- Used Windows built in Windows Update troubleshooter which lists two errors that it says it fixed with no changes. Ran multiples times. Before and after other tried things.

- Used Windows Update Troubleshooter tool, WindowsUpdateDiagnostic, downloaded from http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9830262 which lists 4 errors that it says it fixed with no changes. It listed an error code of 0x80070490 that was fixed. Ran multiples times. Before and after other tried things.

- Scanned for malware and viruses with updated Defender and Malwarebytes. Ran multiples times. Before and after other tried things.

I see this listed amongst the errors in Event Viewer.

Fault bucket , type 0
Event Name: WindowsUpdateFailure2
Response: Not available
Cab Id: 0

Problem signature:
P1: 7.8.9200.17099
P2: 80070643
P3: REMOVED STRING OF DIGITS IN CASE IT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE PUBLIC INFO. LET ME KNOW IF NEEDED
P4: Install
P5: 101
P6: Unmanaged
P7: 80070002

Any ideas of what else to try?

I see a mention about being able to create a VBS file that will silently update Defender definitions with task scheduler. This is above my experience and knowledge level. If I am unable to fix this issue, would someone walk me through how to accomplish this as a walk around to my Windows Update issue?

Thank you.
