KB3000850 woe, woe!

I've spent all day trying to get this KB installed. The thing is, even though I'm told it has failed after configuring and reverting back again, when I look in the Installed updates list is says that it was successful. And it offers to download it again for me!
I don't use Avast, I use Webroot Secure Anywhere, which i just disabled, but that didn't make any difference. I've tried the update troubleshooter which then says I don't have any updates installed. I did a 'Brink' repair that is supposed to help (sorry, I can't remember what it was now) and it did say I had something corrupted and thsat it had been repaired.
I'm just about to do an sfc /scannow to see what happens. In the meantime, can anyone offer some advice please?
Update: sfc /scannow no problems shown.

My computer is in total disarray since I installed the infamous "blue donuts galore" kpf 3000850. There is some thing
wrong with the ms patch management program. These hi jinks we do to work around ms problems are unacceptable.
Needless to say I very disenchanted with ms.

Well this is weird. I used your 3 Reset fixes in turn, the last one being the 3 in 1. The first two made no difference. The third one did a lot of 'stuff' and I then d/loaded and installed 3000850 again while I was having a meal. I came back to see my desktop showing but Firefox had locked up. I rebooted again still no joy then another reboot and this time the KB was shown as Successful!

A couple of minutes later, another KB showed up in the Updates for install list, It wasn't 3000850, I'm sure of that so I installed that, but towards the end it said it was 3000850 again! It did the usual reboots, saying both times that it had failed but this time it said it was undoing the update as it had failed.

I then went to Installed Updates again and it now shows two KB3000850 entries as Succeeded!

Just checked again, there is another 3000850 being offered as an update. I can take no more!

Yes, done that already. When it says there are two successfil updates for the same KB I assume the fault there is in the notification, only one update occurred. Checked updates just now, nothing offered.

My wife's netbook is doing similar things, refusing to complete the update so I will attempt your fix on that as well.

Many thanks Brink, you've saved my bacon yet again, I'm obliged to you.

Update: just looked at Uninstall an update and kb3000850 doesn't show in that list. Have I got it or not?

Yeah, KB3000850 should be listed in "Installed Updates" like below if it was successfully installed.

KB3000850.jpg

Did you have all other updates installed first?

If you like, you could see if you may be able to manually download and install KB3000850 instead at the Microsoft link below.

In Installed Updates all I have are two 'copies' of KB3000850 and nothing else. But if I go to Uninstall an Update I have a load of KB's etc. but no KB3000850! I kept checking for updates but there were none offered apart from 3000850 again so I'm not really sure where I'm at!

I already tried to install that one manually but with the same result, failing to configure, reverting etc.

There was no error message, apart from telling me not to turn off computer while it was configuring update, then after a few reboots it said that the update had failed and it was reverting. This applies to every failure to instal this update.

I had no end of issues with update kb3000850 if I recall correctly. this morning I spent the best part of two hours on and off trying to clear up this mess.

so I had avast av installed which as it turns out this update causes havock with avast and the machine simply won't shut down at all!

got logged in, removed problem windows update and rebooted. machine then hung on configuring so opted to force shut down and run system restore to get around the update and get rid but that also hung..

to top it off I then got stuck in an hp auto repair lock up as it would go to a black screen..

finally powered down removed laptop battery and held down power button down with no power connected. powered up clean boot and after a small delay it logged in. removed avast and even the two prior updates for windows too for good measure.. I have hidden the above mentioned kb update and have no plans to install it.

now all is running beautifully and it turns out av comes pre installed in 8.1 in MSE aka Defender.

What was the full error message you got when trying to install it?

The problem is we are not getting any error code. However, during the required reboot there is a quick text notification that pops up and goes away - had to do it twice to get the wording:
======
We couldn't complete the updates
Undoing changes
Please do not turn off your computer
======
The end result is that KB3000850 shows as being successfully installed (I have it listed 3 times now) but it keeps showing up as an available update, and can be installed again with the above text error - rinse repeat.

So we are stuck in a KB3000850 loop that wont go away.
Not sure where to go from here.

Once it showed up in my installed updates as successful I just told it to hide KB3000850 to stop it being offered each time.

I think it was an optional update anyway.
