If you use a Volume licence version of Pro, that feature will not be present - likewise if you activate a retail copy via volume licence (KMS or MAK) you will not be able change to WMC.

Only retail installations can be upgraded.

Hi thanks it was a digital download version so that may well be the case is there any way it can be installed separately or can a third party program be used.

Windows Media Centre is a separate upgrade edition and not a plug-in as was the case with Windows 7 - therefore it cannot be added without a base Pro acitivation (Retail as mentioned above).

I use VLC Player (mainly for consistency between Linux and Windows) and it works fine for me.

There are others that know a lot more than me about media apps. though, perhaps check out the Software and Apps - Windows 8 Forums section.

I use XBMC which does everything that Windows Media Center does plus more.
XBMC is being renamed Kodi and is free open source.

Media Portal is also free program and good ratings. MEDIAPORTAL - a HTPC Media Center for free! - MEDIAPORTAL

Thing i did not like about Windows Media Center is everyday without use, it buffers 2GB of space on drive, then it leaves and the does it again and again. Did not like constant writing on my SSD. No way to stop this process and was not due to recording TV, spoke even to Microsoft, no resolve to this process. It just buffers Live TV ahead of time, for me i had a Tuner card with Cable TV hooked to it.

As others say plenty of other choices.
