HDD noise.

Following on from this weeks updates I have a noticed a definite change in HDD activity and noise. Even when left displaying just the desktop there are constant bursts of HDD activity but while these are long lasting (a couple of minutes at a time) and seemingly pretty constant... an hour in and still they persist... they are not enough to light the HDD light. Not even a flicker. The sound is like very faint machine gun fire, and yes it is quiet in absolute terms but equally in a quiet room its noticeable. Task manager shows everything at zero and yet clicking "disk" on the performance tab does actually show a graph of the constant activity. Actual throughput is probably very very low but it certainly shows in the HDD noise, at least for me.

Just wondered if anyone else had noticed.

For the last couple of days mine has had a lot of disc activity, but then last night it seems to have calmed down and not as bad

I do seem to have the 'Microsoft Windows Search Indexer' almost constant running, this is using my disc almost constantly

That's interesting. I'll see how mine goes over the next day or two. I don't like not having a fully updated system but I could always revert the changes from my disk image files and see which update is the problem one.

I installed the update on Wednesday morning
Initially I had runtimebroker eating up all my RAM so the machine ground to a halt
various other processes that hogged my HD to 100% usage
I did think my machine was totally broken

However, after a few restarts, from last night and all today it is now running fine, performance is great again

it looks to me as if it has been re-indexing everything and also doing some type of maintenance on the system, which has taken a long time for it to go through
