Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a Acer Desktop PC, well recently was in Feb/March of this year.

After experiencing some issues with my browser(s) and other issues I tried to refresh the system. All worked fine until I rebooted the system.
  • After I input my log on password in it a screen comes on saying that windows cannot be activated at this time. Please try later or input the product key.
  • Also I cannot download any updates, I presume because of the activation.

The Pc was purchased New and had windows 8.1 installed with no installation disks or product keys in sight. After much searching I managed to get the product key, manually input it and Nada, Nothing! It would not accept it.

I have done much searching but nothing seems to help! Any pointers please.

Welcome to EF,

You can try my new script to check licence status. It's gives similar output to the old MGA Diag tool for Win 7.

Thank you Superfly, but I can't seem to run the vbs file. Just comes up as script in Notepad!

Seems your extensions are not set to default to WScript.exe

Try right click , Open with, Microsoft Windows Based Script Host.

Hi Dave

To set Wscript.exe to open .vbs files.. see here Default File Type Associations - Restore - Windows 7 Help Forums

Scroll down to the vbs section....

To check that you have the correct key installed see here http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/27129-product-key-find-windows-8-a.html

Option 5 is also a vbs file - if the above settings worked - you can compare the installed key with the one that came with your PC

.. else as SIW2 says use RW Everything portable to check the key

PS: Just something that struck me...
Windows uses a vbs file (slmgr.vbs) to activate - if it can't run that file, activation will not occur - thus it's imperative that it works (apparently some reg cleaners and AV's change permissions etc on that extension reg entry - can cause all sorts of issues)
