Hi,

I recently bought a Sony SVF15A16CXB and it seemed to be a bit sluggish, so the first thing I wanted to do was update to Windows 8.1 to see if that would help. Well, I couldn't install Windows 8.1 without installing all the Windows Updates. When I installed the Windows Updates, the screen got stuck on "Failure to configure Windows updates. Reverting changes..." I got this message several times until I made several tweaks to the system and finally got the updates to go through. However, after they went through, the touch screen stopped working and I could not load the store app to even try to update to Windows 8.1 (when I clicked on the store app, the screen would pop up for a second and then just go back to the start screen). I tried several online fixes to no avail, so I finally reset the computer and I am now back at square one. Please help! Did I buy a lemon?! Or is there anyway to make this computer work?? Thank you!

Here's an article that has all the direct links to the 8.1 updates for each OS/processor version.

Of course, you'll have to go through all the prerequisites again until the update will install.

Thank you for the response; but I'm not sure how this solves the problem of the touchscreen and app store not working after I go through all the prerequisites again. Unless you think after the Windows 8.1 update those issues will be resolved...? Thanks again.

So, after scouring the internet, I seem to have found a solution. I'm going to share it here in case anyone has a similar issue to mine.

1. Execute Command prompt:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

2. Uninstall anti-virus (Kapersy, in my case)

3. Delete all contents in location: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

4. Command Prompt: sfc /scannow

5. Execute Windows Update Troubleshooter, fix all issues ( "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer" error when you try to install Windows updates )

I then installed updates in THREE separate batches (out of 110 total updates), each time restarting and each time executing steps 2-5 again before downloading the next batch.

That allowed me to finally install updates without any issues and access to update to 8.1. It's currently updating to 8.1, slowly, stuck at 64%... wish me luck..!

The reason I sent those links is because you said you couldn't get the Windows Update screen in the Store to 'stick'. Normally that is because it recognizes that the prerequisites aren't installed and hides the update screen in the Store.

Since you were back at square one, reinstalling the updates was the way to go, but in case you couldn't get to the Store page again, you could have tried the correct link for your version. Those links would have allowed you to run the install, but still would have errored out if the prerequisites weren't complete. But you would have known that it was a prerequisite problem.

But that being said, what's important is that you got it fixed. Glad you are on 8.1. It's a great update.
