Activated Windows 8 keeps asking for activation.

Aeiou.

So I've got to use this PC running on Windows 8 recently. It's pretty neat, I have to say. There were no problem first. But lately, it occasionally keeps asking me for activation. Even though I'm pretty sure it is activated.
Right after startup, and sometimes even during usage, a blue screen pops up, asking me to activate my Windows in the Settings. It even promts me a button to go right there. But clicking on it redirects me to a page that appearently does not exists/is expired - no wonder, as it already is activated.
Also, if I go into the System, at the bottom it says the Windows is not activated, and a text saying to click there for more informations. But appearently, clicking there redirects me to an other page, which states that the Windows is activated. Typing „slmgr/xpr” into CMD also verifies that my Windows 8 activated.

So, even though my Windows 8 is proven by itself to be activated, it still acts like it is not. What could've caused this? And how could I fix it? I'd really apreciate if someone could help.

Thanks in advance.

So where di you obtain this PC from? Is the Windows 8 install a factory OEM install? It wouldn't happen to be Windows 8 Enterprise would it?

It tries to be hungarian, so it looks like some letters are messed up because of the letter coding. But it shows a lots of IDs, keys and as far as I can see it says it is licenced (third row from bottom) - I guess it means the Windows version is licenced.

About the other question; I don't know. I wasn't the one who bought this PC. My brother's father bought it for him, and I'm just using it, too. And no, it's not Enterprise. It seems to be simple Windows 8.

It's hard to read even with Google translate - but it seems you are not legit - Core with a KMS volume licence - you are in grace period thus showing as activated - it will expire in a few days.

So you're saying it probably is not a legal copy? It might be true, I don't know - I wasn't the one buying this machine, neither the one installing the OS. But how comes it worked perfectly for a while at the beginning then?

KMS activation is temporary - PC's connect to a server on a LAN and obtains activation from it at certain intervals - normally every 180 days (for Windows Pro and Enterprise).

An exploit was found that could activate Core but only for 30 days in the case of Windows 8 core (or WMC for that matter) and 45 days for Windows 8.1 core/WMC - these versions cannot be activated with a legal KMS server. (Why gvlk KMS client keys even exist for those editions..beats me)

Thus to answer your question, your PC was activated initially for 30 days, Windows gives you a further 30 days grace (with warnings to re-activate therafter) - that's where you are now...

Yeah, I didn't think you could KMS activate Core? I thought that was an 8 Pro and 8 Enterprise thing. The only VL editions I see on MSDN are Pro and Enterprise. Anyway I had a hunch this system was not activated correctly/legally.

But if it really is a temporary activation only, then why is that using this method (support.microsoft.com/kb/2806745/) to check my activation says that "the machine is activated permanently"?

Unfortunately that further underlines the fact that a crack was used on that PC... it's impossible for a VOLUME_KMSCLIENT key to be permanently activated.

The key in use is generally avalable - here's a list Win8 KMS Client Keys

If it could be permanently activated everybody would be using it.

The fact that it shows as activated but is asking you to activate tells you something is wrong. With KMS activation a machine can be activated but it expires after a set time. That PC or PC's will reactivate if they can connect to that companies KMS server. The server just keeps reactivating them over and over. When a fake KMS server is used, and is then taken down, activation will fail when it times out and that PC can no longer authenticate with the KMS server. The activate now messages your getting are likely because your nearing the end of your activation window. The error message your getting when you try to activate is likely because the fake KMS server used to originally activate it is gone now. One scenario is that Windows on that PC is pirated. The other scenario is that it was a company PC that was sold or stolen and the IT guy has blocked it from the company KMS server. I'm thinking pirated as I don't think there is a VL version of 8 Core.

Since the machine itself is completely new, I guess the answer is not legal Windows then. So anything I can do? Or should I just use some crack or something - I guess there are many on the web.
Also, what will happen if I don't activate it before it expires?

Protect Yourself from Piracy

In certain instances M$ may reward you with a free key for exposing a fraudster.

It's not worth going the piracy route - get a legit key. Look aroiund for discounts from reputable resellers.

M$ have been generous lately to legitimate users, providing free upgrades, rumour has it even Windows 9 may be a free upgrade as well.

PS: Alternatively, you may wanna try a popular Linux distro as well - the latest releases are vastly improved :D

Oh, right, sorry. I could've guessed.
The problem is, as I said, is that I wasn't the one buying the machine. It's not even my PC, basically. My little brother's father bought it for him, and I'm just using it temporary - since my own computer died not so long ago. I know that he bought it, then got an another guy to install Windows onto it. So I guess he knew that wheter it was a legal Windows or not.
Well, whatever. I'll try to do something then. Maybe search and ask the guy who installed it, or something. Just one thing; shall I hurry with it? What happens if this waiting time expires?

I'm not sure what happens, probably some lose of functionality, forced reboots maybe. I'm not an IT guy for a company so I've never seen what happens. Google may tell you.

Yeah well, I'm having the exact same issue, and I know mine's legitimate because I bought it myself from Tiger Direct, Win 8 Pro OEM, for about $120 back when it first came out.
