New Updates Available notification in the Taskbar?

Hello again.

A niggle that's potentially quite a problem is that my 8.1 laptop Taskbar is not notifying me that "New Updates are Available."

I never set to install them automatically, I like to know what's going on and choose how to use my connection and processing power, but the notification from the Log In screen is easily missed and not satisfactory in my opinion. I think there's a third party piece of software to correct this, but I was wondering if there's a better way to restore the function?

Many thanks.

Thanks, that's very interesting.

I wonder if it's a safe download?

It's kosher. Run as Admin though to enable full settings features.

I've installed it and it seems a great little piece of software. Quite comforting to have those alerts back and so much more user-friendly than the yellow writing on the Log-in screen. I tend to miss it as I just quickly enter the password and hit return, whereas my eyes are continually looking at the notification area for one reason or another.

Microsoft's reasoning on getting rid of the feature seems rather dubious and even nonsensical, unless the quote from the link above was a misquote!

UPDATE (Ironically).

I've had to disable the notifier, as it sends VMI Provider Host crazy, causing high CPU usage.

Oh well, it was worth a try and was of great use whilst it lasted.

Bye for now.,
