I recently bought a new ASUS computer, after I set it up a notification popped up asking me to update to windows 8.1

I proceeded to do this and it started to download the updates, when I returned it said "failure configuring windows, reverting changes" its been like this for the past 5+ hours, what should I do?

Thanks in advance

Try pressing F8 during restart, you can either use CMD from there or you can boot into the Safe Mode.
You can also use Windows 8 DVD/USB to boot into the recovery mode, if booting through F8 fails.

Be more specific, how do you restart? Just press the power button you mean? Im also having this issue and for the life of me can't find any solutions online that don't already look like they were copied and pasted just to save face for Microsoft.

Yes, it is annoying, it happened to me dozens of times, till I have decided to do a clean install, try this:

Failure configuring windows updates reverting changes Windows 8, 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 issue

Didn't worked for me. Even though I did repair it through cmd and tried installing windows update again. Now I am stuck, can't update windows to 8.1

I found easy and better way to resolve this

Go to control panel > all control panel items > troubleshooting

Select "Fix problems with Windows Update" from System and Security

This will resolve the update issus, once done. You can update your windows without any issue
