Hi, got a message yesterday on my windows 8.1 laptop saying my windows is expiring in a couple of weeks and I need to put in a product key to renew it. So I found my product key and put i tin and it won't work? It says it can't be accepted and to use another one?

It was originally a windows 8 but I did the update to make it an 8.1.

Anyone able to help?

Thanks.

Hello Curcelli, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You might see if you may be able to activate by phone instead.

Hope this helps, :)

Hi, thanks for replying.

What I can't understand is that my laptop came with it pre-installed and it has been fine for months, why now?

Also is says it knows the key but still won't accept it?

I'll give the phone way a go.

Are you signed in to an administrator account?

Were you able to call and talk to an activation operator to see what they said?

I assume yes because I only have one account on my laptop.

And no, would I need to call Lenovo or Windows?

Curcelli, I agree you should contact Lenovo - also you may want to run this command from command promt... slmgr -dlv.

It wil display the type of install.. OEM, VL, Retail etc... also whether you are in grace period as we assume.

I just got off the phone from Lenovo and the guy said it shouldn't be doing this as it is pre-installed and he recommended that I back up my system and do a system restore.

Does this sound like the right fix?

It's a last ditch effort, but it may help.

They may mean to do a factory restore though.

What is my best route of action?

I would rather not do a restore but it looks like it is my only option at the minute or I may take it back to the shop I got it to be honest.

Would rather a new laptop.

The reason I suggested that command was to check if that installation is dodgy..i.e. running an exploit.. if so, that store needs to be reported.

Right click on the Windows icon and select Command Prompt... then type slmgr -dlv in the window and hit enter.

Yes, Core is not supposed to be volume licensed - that's a loophole found by using an exploit.. also the KMS server IP address is that of your local machine (KMS servers run on a LAN) - this further points to an exploit.

You need a clean install from recovery - hopefully that too has not also been compromised. Then run that command again and let us know.
