Hello,

I have plan to upgrade my laptop hard drive to ssd about next month,

My laptop came with preloaded win 8.0, and as far as I know, the key number are stored in bios, so kinda auto activation...

My friend has a "pirated" win 8.1 installation (there's activator in the dvd), my question is can I use that dvd for installing windows on ssd and then activated via oem key? Because downloading the iso file of win 8 are time consuming and taking too much internet quota

And, because this is my first time dealing with this kind of activation, is there any important thing I need to know about the activation? I just don't want to get problem when activate my windows....

Thank you

Stay away from "pirated" versions of anything!

It would probably be easier for you to use backup imaging software to dissimilar hardware. All information from your HD would be transferred to your new SSD including the OS. You may have a minor activation issue but this could be easily fixed with a phone call.

Just make complete disk backup with something like Macrium Reflect and use it to transfer whole thing to SSD.

I would also advise staying away from pirated and modified install media. There is a good chance it has other hidden modifications and undesirable mods done to it. You'll more than likely end up compromising your system.

Trying to Reset back to my SSD in my laptop wouldn't work for me. I got a "A required partition is missing" error message. Even after partitioning it. I tried a bunch of stuff and finally just threw in the towel and did a clean install. I was leaning that way anyway. The hard part is getting the install media. The only official download around, other than TechNet and MSDN, won't accept OEM keys. My TechNet 8.0 ISO which I believe are identical to Retail DVD's, reads and uses my laptops embedded OEM key and installs the mating 8.0 Core automatically. Activated online with no issues to. My 8.1 ISO won't use the 8.0 embedded code though, it prompts for a product code. It's looking for an 8.1 code. You can do this though to get around it. http://www.eightforums.com/installa...retail-windows-8-1-windows-8-product-key.html Here is the download link, http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/18309-windows-8-windows-8-1-iso-download-create.html?filter but like I said it won't accept OEM keys.
