Hi,

I found out that Update 1 (KB2919355) causes logon screen and lock screen issue.

Custom background for both screens are not displayed, instead of custom background there is a solid black background.

Uninstalling this update rolls back this issue and both screens are displayed correctly. Confirmed on Win 8.1 Pro x64.

I'm gonna report it to Microsoft.

Best regards,
Derlee

I have the same problem on my laptop.

After the Update 1 my Lock Screen is completely blue and it's not showing the image anymore, I can see the icons but not the pic.

In addition to that, when I choose to reboot the laptop I can only see the loading circle and not the phrase "rebooting".

Thanks derlee, as I just posted this on the Windows 8.1 IT Pro Forums:

Windows 8.1 Update-Metro Mail App Issue When Closing App With New '- x' Feature...

Hi,
With the recently installed Win 8.1 Update installed, I'm finding that when attempting to close the Metro Mail app, with the new '- x' feature, after hitting the drop down 'x', my ASUS K-55 non-touchscreen laptop shows this:
However if I elect to drag the Metro Mail app down to close then it returns to the Metro 'Start' screen.
This only happened with the Win 8.1 Update, and if I then press the Windows logo key, it will return to the Metro 'Start' screen. Have tried many Intel HD 400 Display drivers (both from ASUS support site, and the latest drivers directly from Intel site. I only have a Microsoft account (MSN, and Outlook) and a Gmail mail account, and this happens to all three accounts.
This does not happen %100 of-the-time...sometimes when pressing the new '- x' drop down close app feature, the screen/display will properly show Metro 'Start' screen..
.Definitely a Windows 8.1 Update issue, and not a graphic driver issue...

Try these commands in command prompt admin

  • powershell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $Env:SystemRoot\WinStore\AppxManifest.XML
  • wsreset.exe
Hope resetting the apps and clearing windows store might help.

Hi Anup,
Thanks however running both both 'commands' in command prompt admin status...after rebooting still produces above mentioned Windows 8.1 Update issue/glitch...:(
Also tried:
Dism
/Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
SFC
/SCANNOW
I am active in Windows 8/Windows 8.1 Forums....many MS MVPs also members...looks to be a MS issue after the 8.1 Update!
Thanks

Hello,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community Forum.

I would appreciate if you can provide us the following information to help us understand the issue better.

  1. Are all other updates installed on your computer?
  2. Is (KB2919442) update installed on your computer?
  3. Is the issue specific to mail app only?
  4. Are other features of this new update are working fine like minimizing the window, power button etc?

You can refer to the below link to know which updates are installed on your computer.
Windows Update: Frequently Asked Questions
Windows Update: Frequently asked questions - Microsoft Windows Help

Try the below methods and see if it helps.

Method 1:
I would suggest you to run the Windows Update troubleshooter:

Troubleshoot problems with installing updates
Troubleshoot problems with installing updates - Microsoft Windows Help

Restart the computer once after running the troubleshooter. Check if it fixes the issue.

Method 2:
If issue still persists I would suggest you to Perform Clean Boot.

Putting your system in Clean Boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. You need to follow the steps from the article mentioned below to perform a Clean Boot.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows
How to perform a clean boot in Windows

Note: Refer "How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting" to reset the computer to start as normal after troubleshooting.

Method 3:
If issue still persists refer to the below link to run DISM tool to fix inconsistencies on Windows:

Refer to the section “Use the inbox Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool to fix corruption errors
Fix Windows Update corruption errors such as 0x80070002 and 0x80070057

Note: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, you can refer to the following steps to back the registry files on the computer:

  1. Press Windows and R keys to open the run box.
  2. Type ‘regedit’ and press Enter from the keyboard.
  3. Open the file option on the menu bar.
  4. Click on Export and save the file with a name on the desktop.
  5. If you want to restore the file, you can do so by double clicking the file that you have saved on the desktop.

After running the commands, try installing the updates again and check if it fixes the issue.

Additional Information:
For more clarification of this update you can refer to the below Microsoft article.

Install the latest Windows 8.1 Update

Hope this would help. If issue still persists, post back with current status of your computer and result of proposed suggestion, we will be happy to assist you.

Thank you.
Hi thanks for your reply and to answer your questions:

1. All Windows Updates are applied
2. KB2919442 is applied (see attached pic)
3. Yes, I have tried 'every other Metro app' on my system' via the new '-+ drop down feature' and only metro mail is showing the above depicted greyish/blank screen. If I 'drag and drop' within the mail app, then it properly displays & reverts back to the Metro 'Start screen'....
This greyish/blank screen DOES NOT OCCUR ALL THE TIME...when utilizing the new '-+' drop down feature...
When it does occur, pressing/hitting the Windows Logo key returns the screen back properly to Windows Metro Start screen....
It is a cosmetic issue-more then likely however quite annoying.....and seeing all the issues, errors, problems that this KB2919355 Windows Update 8.1 Update has caused is quite shocking to say the least!
4. All other features (thus far) have been working, like search button, power button, and '-+' drop down feature in my other Metro apps...

Ran the Windows and App diagnostic troubleshooters....rebooted- same issue...:(

Ran both DISM/Restore Health tool/command and SFC/SCANNOW command

Did a Clean Boot, and nothing was identified ......Putting your system in Clean Boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue.

The last troubleshooting method would be to uninstall KB2919355, then reinstall.....(however I have reviewed many MS MVP forum posts where this does not rectify the many, many issues that occurring after updating to KB2919355..

BTW-After installing KB2919355, when immediately checking Windows Update, KB2933809 patch was picked up which I immediately installed, as I always check up and make sure that all Windows updates are installed...

BTW II-As I make mention of above, I did a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro/Media, prior to updating to Windows 8.1 Update 1...................................

Kindly advise.....

P.S.S-Update *************************************************************

3. Is the issue specific to mail app only?

Same issue just occurred when attempting to close Metro IE 11...........rebooted, then tried Metro IE 11 again....closed with newly added KB2919355 feature '-+' drop down close.....this time it properly returned to Metro Start Menu......

So it seems this very, very annoying issue is happening intermittently.............however it has only reared its nasty head after installing KB2919355 Windows 8.1 Update........

No answer back yet, however I just reviewed this post:

  1. I've had the same issue, but
I recently found both the cause of this problem and it's solution to be
the Windows Media Center. Do you also have the Windows Media Center
installed on your system with windows 8.1? If so, there seems to be some
sort of conflict the that particular update and the Windows Media Center
being present during the installation of the update.

The solution, as of right now, is to re-install your previous Windows
OS and migrate back to Windows 8.1 without reinstalling the Windows Media
Center. Microsoft is aware of issue and are working towards developing a
patch to fix the problem, but how long that may actually take is anyone's
    guess.

This Windows 8.1 update 1 is mandatory. Anyone currently running
Windows 8.1 who does not accept the update will not have access to future
Microsoft Update Service updates after May 2014.

    http://www.eightforums.com/installa...-1-update-1-kb2919355-installation-fails.html>

I did have Windows 8.1 Pro/w Media Center installed prior to successfully updating to KB2919355, however I'm having the above mentioned issues...
Wondering if I should wait for a hopefully up-coming patch/fix from MS, or try to uninstall the KB2919355 file and then try the 'stand-alone KB2919355 file...?

I have never seen/reviewed soooooooooo many issues, installation problems that the majority of Win 8.1 users are experiencing with this mandatory Windows 8.1 Update KB2919355 patch!!!

Microsoft called my for details about this issue. They collected all my things-that-I-tried list and they forwarded this issue to the technical team to analyze. They also said it seems to be an issue for retail keys (no issue for oem or box keys), however I have no idea what is the difference between applying update to different versions - it's only activation method...
But, apparently there is no denying it is.

I made a test on different workstation - I installed Win 8.1 Pro with preinstalled update 1 (fresh iso) and this issue does not exist. Then, I applied clean Win 8.1 Pro once again from scratch (older version, without update 1), I installed update 1 via Windows Update and... here we go again. Lock screen is solid black again.

Sad story, I hope MS gonna fix it soon.

On my laptop I had Windows 7 OEM then I purchased a retail copy of Windows 8.1 Pro upgrade.

I tried the DISM/Restore Health tool/command and SFC/SCANNOW - Checkhealth - Restorehealth, but nothing.

We are not the only that have this issue, also a friend of mine has this problem with the same laptop as me
(HP DV6 6169sl).

Cheers,

I spent 2 hours on the call with MS, the reason was old graphic driver for ati radeon and wrong method of gpu swiching.

Solved by updating ati drivers to the lastest BETA (!) from amd.com, then setting up gpu switch method to manual or based on power source, then switch to high performance gpu and reboot. Solved in my case.

Sure. If you have notebook with ATI Radeon:

1. Perform complete uninstall of any AMD graphic drivers (also Catalyst Control Center).
2. Download beta drivers 14.4 (or 14.3 if you find somewhere):
2a) 32-bit Windows 7 or 8: Desktop
2b) 64-bit Windows 7 or 8: Desktop
3. Install them.
4. reboot and go to catalyst control center, then go to GPU switch mode and select "based on power source or manually". After several screen blinks and about 20 seconds, click on "High performance GPU".
5. Lock you notebook or reboot to see whether background is that one you selected.

If you have a desktop computer: just install lastest beta drivers for Radeon.

If you don't have Radeon GPU, maybe you need to try with NVidia lastest beta drivers.

I have a Radeon HD 7600M Series GPU on my Samsung Laptop (also Intel HD4000 GPU).
I already have the Cat 14.4 beta Driver installed ( I got that from your post). :)

The driver works fine. I didn't try setting the Default to Radeon GPU yet. Will try that next.

Thanks, I'll let you know how it goes.

Hi.

There is no GPU switch mode with Samsung NP350E7C-S07PL (Radeon 7600m, Intel 4000) and Catalyst 14.4.
Any other solutions?

Doesn't work for me.

I've clean amd drivers with amd cleanup utility, then I've removed all Intel application.
Then I've installed CCC 14.4 RC1 (~288MB), but Radeon needs Intel, otherwise Radeon don't work. And then lock screen was OK. (because all works on standard drivers).
Then I've installed newest Intel 4000 drivers. After restart everything is at is was - lock screen is broken.

I've attached cards properties, CCC and Intel infos (I can't change Intel info page nor card properties to English).

Maybe Intel drivers/app is too new?

EDIT: And now it works. I update samsung recovery app and settings app with SW Update, and then I was forced to restart OS twice, so I did. And after restart logon screen display properly. Strange.

So, I am having this same issue. I have tried the suggestions from this thread, but nothing has helped so far.

I am using onboard/iGPU graphics from intel 4770k, and connect my monitor via HDMI port on the motherboard (ASUS Maximus VI Hero), with Windows 8.1 Pro x64. I was using nvidia graphics drivers when I had GTX780Ti installed, but I have removed that dedicated card and now only use the iGPU. I stopped using the dedicated card several months ago, so I do not think it is related to this problem, but it could be. I have run Display Driver Uninstaller in safe mode to try to remove any old remnants of my nvidia drivers that may have been causing the problem. I have completely removed all graphics drivers, then updated to the latest intel HD Graphics 4600 drivers, via Windows Update.

As soon as I run the KB2919355 update (Windows8.1-KB2919355-x64.msu) and restart, I am stuck at logon screen (all black). Then I am forced to do a System Restore to revert the update, and everything is back to normal.

I also tried to update my motherboard BIOS, but that did not seem to help. I have tried changing various settings within the BIOS (i.e. set default display device to "iGPU" instead of "Auto"), but none of these changes have helped.

The only other thing that may be of interest is the fact that I was using modified imageres.dll for custom system icons. However, I do not think this is contributing to the problem. I have since removed/restored the imageres.dll and run sfc /scannow to restore any other system files that may have been altered. Additionally, my laptop, which is running Windows 8.1 x64 (non-pro), has the same modified icons and it has no problem with the update. Everything installs and works perfectly on that machine. (FWIW, that machine is running a dedicated nvidia graphics card (gt750 mobile), so is not using the iGPU like the desktop machine is -- since this is really the only significant difference between the two machines, it leads me to believe that the intel iGPU is not agreeing with the KB2919355 update)

At this point I am running out of options. I am relatively computer-savvy and generally a good problem-solver, but I am stumped by this one. Any novel ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

It is a graphics driver problem. I had that confirmed by Microsoft. You can install the update´if you use the right graphics driver beforehand. I have a AMD System so I cannot say which driver you need.
