What is the problem with the 8.1 update?

The web, this forum, MS community forums and other forums contain a lot of posts and stories about people having issues installing the Windows 8.1 updates.

I can't install the updates. I have tried every "fix" I've seen, including, but not limited to sfc, DISM, direct downloading of the files, etc., to no avail. The three updates prior to the massive 8.1 update installed fine but now I can't install anything after that. I am also now unable to use prior restore points to restore the computer to any point prior to the installation of the first three updates. I am able to create a new restore point and restore it successfully so restore is not broken. My computer operated perfectly prior to this with no problems whatsoever. Now I can't update.

What in the heck are we to do? I believe this a MS problem and NOT an issue with my (our) computers. I'm happy for those of you who were able to install the updates without issue, but based on my research today there are a lot of us who cannot install the updates. It wouldn't be that big of an issue, except for the fact MS announced that without the update installed users will not be able to install any further updates in the future.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?

NO - and that includes Microsoft - spent 3 hours with MS Tech yesterday with no success. Many, many users are having problem with Update 1 on Windows 8.1 and MS is flailing around giving bad advice or no advice at all. I an usually a MS defender, but this is unbelievable that they didn't do this right before release. Someone at the top needs to take control and get the situation solved - fast!

I read earlier this week that the 8.1 update was flawed, wouldn't look for updates after it, and was pulled by MS.

Has MS fixed this and released 8.1 ?
