I just successfully upgraded my mom's XP machine to Win 8.1 cause of Microsoft's end-of-support for the old OS. It took the best part of a day backing up her files, installing and activating and then setting up new software on the new OS. It's not something I'd want to do again in a hurry and I'm a little concerned about this new update which I've just heard about. All this business of upgrading and updating is time consuming and stressful to me! I've set her updates to the recommended automatic setting, so what I want to know is: Will the update hijack her machine and install itself without warning once it becomes available or will it be an optional one that we can initiate ourselves? I'd rather it'd be the latter to be honest. She works from her home on her PC so any surprise down time while the patch installs is not desirable. The original 8 to 8.1 update on my own PC , took ages with several reboots so I'm kind of apprehensive about this new one.
