Screenshot (8).png[/CODE]I cannot change the Windows update settings even though I am the administrator. It is grayed out in the snapshot above. I am the only user. I created a local account as well. I need to change the update settings to download updates automatically but I am stuck on "check for updates but let me choose..". I need to change the setting in order to get internet access at my work using my home computer. The IT person at work recommended that I install Windows 8.1 to see if it would correct the problem, but the new installation did not work. This second screenshot shows that I am an administrator,I think. I would appreciate anyone's advice.

unable to change user settings to "nonconfigure"

Dear Brink -

Thank you for you suggestions. I have attached another screenshot to show that I have no files (hidden or not), in the location the tutorial said to look. If you have any last suggestions please let me know. IT at work said that they were interested, given that the issue is due to my use of my home computer for work purposes; but they have not gotten back to me.

no success

Hi Brink -

I followed the tutorial again and like I said there was no " gpedit.msc incuded. See warning box at the top of the tutorial for more on this.

" Your tutorial warning box says that I likely do not have the correct version of Windows. I bought the computer from COSTCO one year ago and Windows was already installed, no disk included. I am not sure what version I have. The thing is I had access to internet at work for 4 months of use and then in January it stopped - just like that. I do not fiddle with the settings on my computer - everything works great. If you have any more advice then that would be great. I can not find any Local Group Policy Editor on my computer.

Ah, ok. I'll dig for the registry key for this, and post back with a .reg file later that'll hopefully undo this for you.

Are you joined to a domain?

I do not believe I am "joined to a domain". I am the only user and there is no sharing and the computer setup is the basic home computer used for documents, email and some internet.

Ok Matthew,

Here's the .reg file that should clear all Windows Update policies. To use it, you would just need to download it to your desktop, double click on it to merge it, approve all prompt to approve the merge, and restart the computer to apply.
