Solved New Computer WIN. 8 -how to set for auto-updates?

Hello - On Win 8 (not 8.1) will be first -time user soon - How do i do the updates for Win 8 once new computer is set up and 'running' ? Because it's been sitting on a store shelf i'm sure there are Win. updates required ..not familiar how to find 'that' section inorder to do the updates ! Guess i want to do that before signing onto internet - right ? this will be a whole new world to me - been using XP for eons ! thanks in advance - Edythe
PS any other 'hints' as a newby to '8' will be greatly appreciated even if i haven't thought to ask ! LOL

PPS: do you recomment i just set options to ''automatic' updates? with XP i know how to find Control Panel to set that but how do i find Control Panel (if that's where i do it ) on Win 8 ... boy am i 'green' ! thanks again !

The tutorial below can help show you how to turn on or off automatic installing of Windows Updates. Personally, I've never had a problem with it turned on, but some folks like to manually check and install them instead.

Even with automatic updates turned on, you would still need to check for and install some non-important and optional Windows Updates though.

Hello and thanks for replying - then it's bascially the same idea that i've used in XP - went to control panel/ security/ the settings for auto or on-auto updates for Windows --- o.k thanks i'm fine now

Hello - thanks for the information - i hope i won't have a problem finding update area -LOL - but i did click on your supplied links and see the default for 'auto download & install' is there so maybe it's best i just leave it alone? let it do it's job?
I just had a brief melt-down (fear) - just saw a post in these forums in the 'general forum' alluding that Microsoft will stop supporting Win 8 and one must get 8.1 asap?! maybe i am wrong and not understanding the poster's information. But i don't know if that means if one has only Win 8, downloads of security updates, etc. will be discontinued and only way to avoid that & stay 'protected' is to download 8.1 !! I just got my new lenovo PC today installed with only Win 8 (it was a good sale !) - i'm not comfortable trying to do the 8.1 upgrade - no reason except that i might not hit the right button and ruin the download ! If what i read is accurate (discontinuing ''support'' of Win 8 similar to what is happening to XP) then must i upgrade to 8.1 ? thanks in advance , Edythe

Morning & thanks for the above - i feel better knowing what i read is 'not' true - and i did go to the link aoubt 'life-cycle' and saw that Service- Packs will be disconinued in 2 yrs (if i read that correctly)...but not the ''update definitions?) Quesion: Until i get familiar with win 8 (stilll not set-up Lenovo 520 PC) is it alrigiht if i just hold-off the 8.1 update for a while because I want to reinstall FireFox/2 malware programs/printer also is there any chance MS will do/offer an auto -update later on of 8.1 so i don't have to do it myself? (similar or along with definitions updates?)
The tutorial you included is just great and i saved it ...it is pretty much straightforward so i feel a tad 'calmer' now. I'm a 'senior' and unfortunately things tend to 'rattle' me faster than ever- especially a major 'change' with all the new computer information - i was living in a cloistered world with XP for over 8 yrs and "knew" my computer so well - LOL. Guess i have to come into the 'modern-world' (sorry to admit i still only use a 'throw-away' cell phone - never did get a 'Smart Phone' - LOL so maybe this will explain my timid-nature going into the world of Win. 8+)

Hello - here's my thought and what i decided to do:
After we hookup the new computer, i may as well bite the bullet & do the 8.1 upgrade (but only after i first do Win. Updates then transfer my Norton into the new computer and before i'd save any folders/files or install Malwarebytes & SuperAntiSpyware that i current have in this computer) because last evening spoke with friend who also just got new computer and knows as much as i do about computers (that speaks for itself - LOL) said the prompt appeared asking 'permission' to download & install update after she/husband booted up - said it was no problem, so perhaps it's best i do same thing and get it over with and off my mind. thanks so much, Edythe

since last post spoke with Lenovo -advised not to update just yet to 8.1 due to 'driver-issues' -they have customers calling -many problems because ''correct'' drivers are not yet available to download to allow 8.1 to operate properly. To stay with Win 8 until problem fixed. I don't know if this is for all manufacturers or just a Lenovo-situation. But what i don't understand is that their latest computers already loaded with 8.1 & updated drivers exist & function with no problem (according to them) since the newer models now shipping to stores (or from their site to order) have the necessary updated drivers for win 8.1

Yeah, it's most like for that model number.

In addition to waiting for drivers needing to be available, they may also be working on a new BIOS/UEFI firmware as well.

I would wait, and keep checking back with Lenovo to see when they have them available.
