What version of Windows 8 do you have?

Windows 8
Windows 8 Pro
Windows 8 Enterprise

32 or 64 bit

Did the laptop come with it or did you upgrade to Win 8? If upgrade, how?

Do you have a Windows 8 install DVD or repair disc?

What is the make and full model number of the laptop. You should be able to restore to factory state if you can't get a repair of install disc to use. The online Users Guide should explain how to do this. You need to backup any data you don't want to lose first though.

I also have WIn 8 X64. I can create a Windows 8 Repair disc on my computer then upload it to my Dropbox account for you to use if you have any way to burn a CD/DVD or make a flash drive.

Edit: Uploading Repair disc Windows 8 64-bit.iso to my Dropbox account now. Should be available in 20 minutes or so.

Download Repair disc Windows 8 64-bit.iso (395,161,600 bytes) from my Dropbox account.

You can burn a CD-R from the ISO. I used ImgBurn to do this and it works fine.
Alternatively, you can create a bootable flash drive:
  1. Download and run Universal USB Installer Easy as 1 2 3
  2. Select Windows 8 from the first drop down list, all the way to the bottom
  3. Select the Repair disc Windows 8 64-bit.iso file
  4. Select your USB flash drive
  5. Check the box to format the flash drive
  6. Click Create
In 5 minutes or so you will have a bootable flash drive you can use to Repair your Windows 8 X64 systems. I tried this and it works fine as well.

Note   Note
I have not tried it but this should work with any Windows 8 X64 system since you are not trying to install anything.

Boot the CD or flash drive and do the System Restore as described here: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2855-system-repair-disc-create-windows-8-a.html

I would first try to find out which process is holding things up.

Error Message - Where Does it Come From - Windows 7 Help Forums

If you cannot download Process Explorer on the laptop, download it with another PC on a Flash drive and run it from there - it need not be installed on your system. Once you know which process is holding things up, kill the whole process tree in Process Explorer.

Today I started my PC and could not get past a blue screen with a frozen "Please wait" and a non-functioning Cancel button. I could see my desktop by using Alt-Tab, but as soon as I released the Alt key the blue screen returned. Swiping from the right and clicking on the task bar appeared to be somewhat functional, but remained covered by the blue screen. It appears the screen is stuck in "always-on-top" mode.

The blue window appears to be a system or Metro app screen. I saw a couple of references to Skydrive when researching the issue so I thought perhaps Skydrive was not connecting properly and was waiting for something to happen, but not timing out when it didn't happen.

I use a Wi-Fi connection so I used the hardware switch (Fn F3 on Acer laptop) to disable the network connection then pressed and held the power button to force a shutdown. I started the PC and now it is working OK with no issues.

I use DropBox so my next step is to determine how to permanently disable Skydrive access.

I forgot about this thread, but the problem is fixed. But I have another issue, but i can't link it currently. It's about my HDD and no one's finding the thread. It's under Drivers & Hardware and search "Computer HDD".
