Apologies if this has been addressed. I had Win 8 Pro (not an OEM version) running and upgraded to 8.1 Pro via the Windows Store. Can this license with Win 8.1 be transferred to a new computer that I plan on building? Thanks.

If you bought the boxed version of Windows 8 Pro, there were only two versions available. One is Windows 8 Pro Upgrade and is used to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8 Pro. The second version is the OEM version. In Windows 8 the OEM version can be installed on another PC that you own but if you sell or transfer the PC with the OS then it is locked to that PC for the new owner. This is called the "personal use license" for the OEM version and is only available for Windows 8. The PUL does not apply to an OEM version that came pre-installed on a PC from a vendor. Windows 8.1 is now offered in a OEM and Retail version and does not have the PUL.

Makes sense. Two more questions which are not clear to me. How do I determine if I have the upgrade version of Windows 8 Pro or the OEM version (I did a clean install of Win 8 Pro, not an upgrade from Windows 8, so it would have to be an OEM version)?

And if I have the OEM version and I install it on a new PC I build, will the upgrade to Windows 8.1 be available to me in the Windows Store?

Thanks for the information, things certainly are much more convoluted since the XP days!

I assume you have the OEM version which is the only full version available to the consumer. And yes you get a free upgrade to 8.1. You can install on another PC you own but must remove it from the previous PC.

Yes, removing the software is a must, the one thing I understood from the beginning. Thanks.

Hi guys, i'm a newbie here but I hope I can help solve this issue. When you install the new o/s onto the new build you MUST format the old hard drive to wipe the data off the old system. Once you have installed the o/s onto the new hard drive let it go to the activation wizard and then ring the toll free number and put in the installation ID number into the 9 boxes. it will then say if ur successful or not, if you are successful it will then give you 8 boxes to input 6 numbers, after inputting these numbers it will then say click NEXT, this will then activate windows. (I know this as I have done this with my new laptop as I wanted an SSD installed).

Hope this helps

I think there is a limit to how long the upgrade to Windows 8.1 will be available in the Windows Store. Is this correct?

My guess is at least 2 years as MS will support Windows 8 for 2 years and then you have to upgrade to 8.1 to get mainstream support.

Reading the MS website there isn't a time constraint to upgrade from 8 to 8.1. at present this is the info given.

It has been publicized extensively that if you do not upgrade W8 to 8.1 within two years of the release of 8.1, then it will no longer be offered as a free upgrade in the Windows Store. I just read that on PC World. It was also on various online tech websites. Something to keep in mind.

This being said, how often have MS actually kept to their dates with running O/S's lol

Sorry, I got confused by the fourth post by Phone Man. I obtained three copies of W8pro, two from the windows store and one from a retailer, these are all upgrades from an earlier OS (in my case all XP). The shop version has both discs, the Windows store versions were downloaded but I also sent away for a pair of discs so that I have original discs. These are not upgrades from 8 to 8 pro, do they count as OEM? Will I also be able to transfer to a newer pc build in the future, say if a motherboard failed?
