"Compatibility Issues" Preventing Windows 8.1 Update

Yesterday, I tried downloading the full version of Windows 8.1 from the Windows store. It ran the first two steps (downloading, installing), and then it came to "checking for compatibility." After five minutes, I got a message in the form of a banner across the screen (the color of my metro background) that said I needed to uninstall an app called "Kaspersky Internet Security Suite/Anti-Virus/Pure/Crystal. I ran the executable file "kavremover" from the Kaspersky website to completely remove my existing anti-virus software (Anti-Virus Internet Security 2013) and all versions of "Kaspersky Pure." Upon the 10th reboot and installation attempt, it continues to show me this message. What can I do?

Hi Vialtoclef,

Apparently, Kapersky has a product tutorial on how to prepare your computer for the Windows 8.1 update:

Important tip: Prepare for the Windows 8.1 update

I do understand that the removal tool should have worked; however, since it did not, maybe you can do a reinstall and follow the preparation tutorial to see if it takes when your computer (using Kapersky) is properly prepared for the update. Good luck.

I tried to reinstall it and download the newest version, but it didn't work. To my knowledge, I don't even have the app it's telling me to uninstall. How can I find where it is?

I'm not an apps guy but did you check the "all apps" view?

Welcome to Windows EightForums, Vialtoclef.

Did you run a file cleaner? Also, badly written uninstall programs leave things left behind in the Registry. Try running a Registry cleaner. I use CCleaner. Do use the backup option before cleaning on any of these cleaners.

Good luck.

I'm at a quandary here. Perhaps a shortcut left behind? Something has to be telling the system that i's still installed.

Not quite sure where we're at here. You reloaded Kaspersky with the latest version? Did you use the preparation to that my2cents suggested? If all that be true, perhaps fresh install 8 without Kaspersky then go out to 8.1.

At the risk of going against my own recommendations, I am going to suggest that you download this portable program and run it to see if you have any "unlinked" Kapersky information/entries left in the registry. The only reason I am suggesting this specific program is because it is a gentle registry cleaner and should only show you safe entire to delete; however, please only delete those entries that Kapersky may have left behind and see if that gets you through your issue. Here is a screenshot of what it will look like:

Screenshot (13).png

Now, just expand each field and look for Kapersky entires. If you find any, let us know how many and provide a screenshot) if you can. If not, you can right-click each Kapersky entry and open it in the registry to delete it. Please understand that I do not want you to click "start cleaning" because you will find a ton of errors on the first run that are not harmful and don't need to be touched. So. you can download the Wise Registry Cleaner Portable here if you would like to give it a shot:

WiseCleaner Downloads - Download Free Registry Cleaner, Download Free Disk Cleaner, Download Wise Care 365

Another way to do it would be to open regedit and do a search for Kapersky and delete the remnants that way but if you are not comfortable in doing it that way, I'd try the above first. good luck.
