Windows 8.1 Issues with Internet Connectivity

Hello,
Yesterday I upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1 on my Dell Studio XPS PC. Everything was working fine until the update completed. Now the only browser that works is IE 11. The only web sites that will work on Opera, Chrome, and Firefox are Google sites. I tried uninstalling and re-installing Chrome but no luck. Also I have HMA VPN and that will not connect as well. Seems like any app that connects to the internet will not work. It will connect to my internal NAS and network at home.
Note that my connection is a wired connection.
I had Windows firewall turned off in Windows 8 and it is still turned off in 8.1.

Not sure what the specific source of your problem is here but I'm guessing that the default search engine for IE11 is Bing and you may be using Google for the others. If so, check out this article and see if it helps.
Good luck.

Google is broken in IE11 on Windows 8.1 [updated]

Thank you for the reply, the link you provided does not appear to be specific to my issue. The other Web browsers are acting as if there is no internet connection when loading pages. This also appears to go for other programs that require connectivity ex: HMA VPN. My e-mail does download though.

I did update the Broadcom Gigabit NIC driver from the Windows one to the manufacturer's Windows 8 one but that did not help.

As noted in my original post, sites such as YouTube, Google Search, Google Maps do work in Firefox, Chrome, and Opera. It almost seems some ports are being blocked by Windows??

Hi

Run CMD "Command Prompt" as admininstrator.
In the command line type: netsh winsock reset
Press Enter then restart your PC, the problem solved.

i was dealing with this problem off and on for quite some time. I wrote a batch file to flush the dns, release then renew the ip. I left it on all of our employees desktops so that they could double click and be back up and running. Quite simple and works!

in notepad type:
echo off
cls
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
exit

then save it as a .bat on the desktop and double click whenever needed!

better to check your network connection performance first, otherwise the rest of the work
will all go in vain. To do a network test just go to:
Test your Connection and click the button to start the tests.
The Connectivity Checker will perform a series of network tests for modern Web Services
like WebSockets and WebRTC as well.

Windows 8.1 problem

Hello people ,

I need help and its really killing me. I can't access my wifi thru windows 8.1 acer brand laptop for a week and I felt regretted for buying a laptop powered by Window 8.1 cause it itself is really disappoint as the amount of problems just keep on rising. Okay straight to the point. I reset the whole laptop which includes having to delete all those files and drives that I once used to have before I reset the laptop. So after long hours of removing those files , I was happy to see a good clean space and as usual a new fresh start. Well as usual , you can get really bored and you just gotta download a game. So I downloaded Sims 3 ( 1.93 GB ) thru torrent and the download stops at 93.5% and I was surprised to see that the internet stopped working. I tried to reconnect it but it didn't work so I leave the laptop away for a day. After 6 days of waiting for the wifi to come back , I got really frustrated as I think back of that actual same problem that happened 4 months ago and I was like " Oh dear... not again , I can't remember what I did to fix it". Well the real problem is this , I click on my Wifi which is called " Dell " and as I tried to connect , it keeps checking for network requirements for quite a long period and soon after , it says " can't connect to this network " So I was like why is this happening and yes I did tried other solution such as changing the preferred DNS server and stuff. The troubleshooter says that " You have no preferred network wireless " and " A network cable is not properly plugged in or may be broken " PLEASE HELPPPPP THANKS

It looks like wired network is enabled, try disabling it and leave WiFi only.
