System issues after latest Windows Updates for Windows 8

I had problems installing the latest Windows updates. The Update Scan froze intermittently. So I only partially updated. I decided to do a system restore. And then started with the updates again. One at a time. Restarting after each one etc. Eventually I thought they were all installed successfully.

However, this morning every time the laptop is idle, Windows Module Installer kicks in and really works the system and doesn't stop until i start using the laptop again. It's using 50% cpu ... and working my fan hard. This issue happened once before after a Windows Update .. couple of months ago[i believe there was one particular update causing the problem and I managed to remove it and didn't install it again.

I've had a look at all the updates to make sure they were installed successfully. One stands out ...

As the Update Scan Froze part way through ... aI had to do a system restore and start again.

Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2871389) : FAILED
Error details: Code 800F082F Update type: Important

I decided to uninstall the 'successfully' installed (KB2871389) as I wondered if it was the glitch causing my issues.

These things may not be related to the issues I'm having. But I thought I'd mention them anyway.

And advice would be welcome. Thanks.

As I understand it, the Windows Module Installer is trying to compress setup files, to save space. This compression uses the CPU and disk quite hard.

I found that if you just let it run for a while (maybe hours rather than minutes), it will eventually complete what it's trying to do and stop.
