Problem with Product key on Laptop?

Hello,

To start things off I recently purchased a Lenovo Y500 and just can't stand the pre-installed programs and setup.

The problem is there's no product key on the back of the laptop, or in the manuals I got with it.

People suggested me using a keyfinder to get my Product key, but a lot of people say that the product key used is a manufacturer key which is useless when installing a fresh version of windows.

Does anybody know if I'ld have to purchase another product key or if using a keyfinder would actually work?

Thanks for helping!

If you're going to install anything other than what came with your laptop, you will need to purchase a new key. If you plan on re-installing the factory image, you can recover the key with Belarc...

Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit, for software, hardware and security configuration information on your computer. Software license management, IT asset management, cyber security audits, and more.

My laptop came with windows 8 and a bunch of programms nobody uses pre installed.

So if I recover the key it will work when installing windows 8 again, or did I missunderstand that?

The key should be embedded in the Bios and if you install the same version of Windows then it should read the key and activate. If you install a different version then you need a new key.

what i do not understand is how you could buy a laptop and not get the product key? it normally is on the underneath part of the laptop. Go back to where you bought it and demand the key.

I don't think this is true on PCs with Windows 8 pre-installed by the OEM. The key is baked into the BIOS so there's no need for a sticker as you should never need to type it in.

You don't need to know the product key on OEM PC's with Windows 8 preinstalled. The product key is embedded in the BIOS and any official Windows 8 install media will read it automatically. The tricky part is getting the install media. I did a clean install of Windows 8 on my ASUS laptop and the product key was auto detected and the matching version, 8 core was installed. Activated online no problem. It shipped with 8 core preinstalled and that is what the product code is good for. There is no COA sticker as its not required.

Run this vbs script to get your Product ID & Product Key:
If you have installed "Windows 8 Pro with Media Center" then your script shows the "Windows 8 Pro with Media Center" key - right. But with "Windows 8 pro with Media Center" key you can not install "Windows 8 Pro". And normal, unmodified ISOs doesn't include "Windows 8 Pro with Media Center" - only "Windows 8" and "Windows 8 Pro".

Yes, that script shows the Product Key that the PC is currently activated with. In my case it shows my Media Center key. And yes, you can't install 8 Pro with Media Center from official install media. Only 8 core and 8 Pro are supported. Your Media Center key will be refused. You have to enter an 8 core or 8 Pro key. In my case 8 core is installed by default because of my embedded key. I don't get an option to enter a key. I then upgrade to Pro though "Add Features", and then do it again to get to 8 Pro with Media Center. As I mentioned earlier, if your PC has an embedded code there is no need to run that script. Not unless you have upgraded and forgotten the code used to do it.

Windows 8 does NOT have a product Key on the laptop, as it's stored in the BIOS along with the SLIC table. The OS reads both, and activates accordingly.
