Won't Install Updates

On the 10th July 2013, i was notified that Windows 8 (64 bit) had ± 350 mb updates to do. I downloaded the updates, but when it came to install, it gave the window "Windows Update" and the message "Preparing to install..." but nothing further happened, i.e. updates were not installed despite leaving it on overnight. I rebooted a few times and tried again over the next few days, but still no luck - same message "Preparing to install..." but no updates being installed.
Help, any ideas.

Try installing the updates selectively (eg, a few at a time) and then install the very large ones individually.

I did read that thread and tried what was said, but I cannot get a list of the new updates it wants to install. I can only see the ones it did previous to these major ones. When i press "Check for updates" I get the window "Windows Update" with the message inside saying "Windows Update is already checking for, or downloading or installing updates" but nothing is happening apart from the message "Preparing to install..."

I used your Run the Windows Update automated troubleshooter. program which cleared the error. I then installed the updates in batches of 6 at a time and it worked perfectly. Many thanks for your help and solution to my problem. John.
