Hi, I recently bought a used laptop online with windows 8 installed on it. After going through the PC info I noticed that my copy of windows is activated but my license to use windows expires on: 1/7/2014. Does this mean I will have to purchase a new copy of windows after that date? Or is it a pirated copy in which case the OEM license wouldn't work?

Hello jv1241:

Here is a screenshot of my Windows 8 Pro Retail License with no fixed date of expiration specified. I would ask that you draw your own conclusions from the comparison. Good luck:

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm not sure if it's a trial version because it expires 6 months from now and I've never heard of a trial that long. I tried the "winver" commander earlier too and it appears that my copy is active from there. Here's what I got:

That may be an 8 Pro Volume License edition. I've seen it listed on TechNet. If it is your not legally entitled to use it. It may fail activation when time runs out. if you download and run the MGA diag tool you may get more info.

It's a quite old thread, mods sorry for bumping this.
To naveen, could you post a screenshot of the Windows Activation screen?
On Jv1241's screen it shows the key is obviously a VLK-KMS key, he might be using KMS-activators or he got activation server from his company.

Judging by the last 4 digits of your key, that appears to be a KMS license activation which always has a set expiration date. Now don't hold me to this because I am not familiar with KMS licensing in general but I think it needs to be reactivated every 180 days via accessing a valid KMS licensing server. However, I'm guessing you don't have that required access because you were not the person that activated the license so your only recourse would be to purchase a legitimate system builder (personal or OEM) or retail copy. Also, you cannot discount the fact that it could be a pirated version as well. See here:

Appendix A: KMS Client Setup Keys

Good luck.

EDIT: OOPS! Kudos to Mr. Showdown for beating me to the punch on this one. Sorry for the (somewhat) duplicate post.

Thanks Mr. Showdown and my2cents! I have attached a scanned copy of the activation window. What is KMS licensing? My vendor said he has installed genuine OEM version of Windows 8 Pro. Have I been cheated?Screenshot.jpeg

You originally stated that you bought a used laptop so whoever you bought it from is not the original system builder. Since OEM licenses do not expire, that is not an OEM license. Now, I don't want to flat out say you have been cheated but if you paid for a used laptop with a genuine OEM licensed copy of Windows installed, you didn't get it.

No, it was not me who posted about used laptop. I also faced same issue as him so posted my issue in the thread he started. Two weeks back I bought a new desktop from a vendor who said he has installed genuine OEM license. Yeah, it looks like he has cheated me. Thanks for your response my2cents!

Oh boy, sorry for that mistaken quote; however, the fact that you bought it from a "new vendor" makes your situation even worse IMHO. Now, maybe the vendor is using some "play on words" when he references he installed a "genuine OEM license"; however, I would certainly start my investigation back where you made the original purchase and if you don't get any satisfaction there, I would certainly consider escalating your issue back through Microsoft because I don't believe they will tolerate any misrepresentation of intent by a qualified licensed vendor (if he is in fact qualified and licensed). Good luck.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt window (in Start, type 'Command' - a Command Prompt icon will appear, right-click on it, and select Run as Administrator)
At the Prompt, type

Licensingdiag.exe -report %userprofile%\desktop\report.txt -log %userprofile%\desktop\repfiles.cab

(note the spaces!)
two files will be put on your desktop -
open the 'report.txt' file in Notepad, and copy/paste the results to your response - you can ignore the repfiles.cab file for the moment, as it's only backup data
