Your license to use windows expires on:

Hi, I recently bought a used laptop online with windows 8 installed on it. After going through the PC info I noticed that my copy of windows is activated but my license to use windows expires on: 1/7/2014. Does this mean I will have to purchase a new copy of windows after that date? Or is it a pirated copy in which case the OEM license wouldn't work?

    Hello jv1241:

Here is a screenshot of my Windows 8 Pro Retail License with no fixed date of expiration specified. I would ask that you draw your own conclusions from the comparison. Good luck:

I wonderif you have a trail version. Is there a microsoft code label? Is there a recovery partition that would allow you to go back to the original? Just some thots.

    OK, try this:

Open a command prompt and type "winver" (without quotes). You should get this. Please post your results:

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm not sure if it's a trial version because it expires 6 months from now and I've never heard of a trial that long. I tried the "winver" commander earlier too and it appears that my copy is active from there. Here's what I got:

That may be an 8 Pro Volume License edition. I've seen it listed on TechNet. If it is your not legally entitled to use it. It may fail activation when time runs out. if you download and run the MGA diag tool you may get more info.

Hi Jv1241, did you get this issue resolved? Even I am facing the same problem. Can you please let me know how did you fix the issue?

It's a quite old thread, mods sorry for bumping this.
To naveen, could you post a screenshot of the Windows Activation screen?
On Jv1241's screen it shows the key is obviously a VLK-KMS key, he might be using KMS-activators or he got activation server from his company.

Judging by the last 4 digits of your key, that appears to be a KMS license activation which always has a set expiration date. Now don't hold me to this because I am not familiar with KMS licensing in general but I think it needs to be reactivated every 180 days via accessing a valid KMS licensing server. However, I'm guessing you don't have that required access because you were not the person that activated the license so your only recourse would be to purchase a legitimate system builder (personal or OEM) or retail copy. Also, you cannot discount the fact that it could be a pirated version as well. See here:

Appendix A: KMS Client Setup Keys

    Good luck.

EDIT: OOPS! Kudos to Mr. Showdown for beating me to the punch on this one. Sorry for the (somewhat) duplicate post.

I acquired a new laptop and the wifi lease expires.
Does anyone know why the wifi lease expires, and if it's possible to stop it? My laptop is an Acer Aspire v5 running windows 8 64-bit. If anyone knows why, please tell me because i find restarting the wifi every day tedious when working from home. Has this happened to anyone else?
