Windows Update won't run

I tried to download an app and got the error message 0X80240004 and that says I need to update Windows. When I went to Windows Update it refused to run because the service was not running. I looked and Windows Update is running. Rebooted and still cannot get Update to run.

Thanks. I have tried these and no change. I ran the "fix" solution and no changes. I'm really baffled with this.

Try to stop the service, reboot then start it again.

Tried this. I stopped the service, rebooted and looked at the service afterwards and it was already started. I didn't have to restart it. I still get this message when I click on: Check for Updates. I get a message: Windows Update can't check for updates because the Service is not running. I check Services and it shows Windows Update is running. Back to square one!!!

Sorry to hear that. I think it would be the same as windows 7 (I do not have 8) try sfc / scannow 3 times, if no help a system restore, and then a repair install.

There is another option before refreshing.

If a restore point won't help, you will see a tutorial on using the DISM command in my signature.
Try it.

If it doesn't help, repair install.

As a last resort, return to factory specs. :(
