I'm setting up an MSI CR70 for one of my staff and am having nothing but problems. I removed some of the bloatware and installed avast! plus a couple other programs and it seemed to be working. She had to ship the laptop back to me because it had become unresponsive and she couldn't use it. I restored the laptop to factory settings and left it running for a while. The HDD LED was constantly on so I checked the performance monitor and disk activity was at 100%. The laptop was sluggish. I eventually worked out it was the scheduled maintenance running but not doing anything. I stopped it and tried installing updates manually but it stays at 0%.

I ran the update troubleshooter and it said it fixed a problem but it was no better so I emptied the SoftwareDistribution folder. I then ran DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth which took over 2 hours to complete. When it finished I ran DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth which finished quite quickly so I checked for new updates and only selected the 2 optional updates (hardware drivers) which installed no problem. I then selected all the recommended updates and nothing happened...back to being stuck at 0%.

I just ran /Scanhealth again and it didn't take as long but said "no corruption detected" I haven't installed anything except a few updated drivers. Any ideas or should I send the laptop back?

Personally in cases where you need to identify if it is soft or hardware related problem I like going with safeboot or using a live cd OS and take it from there.

You can't run Windows Update in safemode. Anyway, after much effort the laptop is now downloading updates. I don't exactly know what fixed it because I did so many different things but at least it's working now.

Like the sig. It reminds me a bit of this funny one:
