Went from activated to non activated with error 0xC0000022

Ok so mid day sunday my computer rebooted for windows updates and all was fine. About 3 hours later I started having issues with my computer. My wifi wouldn't work properly, it wasn't retrieving a IP address from my router and when I would hit the button on my laptop to toggle it on and off it wouldn't come back on at all even after several reboots, and it starting popping up asking me to activate windows. When I would click activate under the pc settings after hard wiring my laptop a circle would spin for a second and then nothing.

So earlier today I "refreshed" my laptop and my wifi problems were fixed. But it's still pestering me about activation and I have the watermark on my desktop.

I've tried using slui 3 and slui 4 to no avail. When entering my key under slui 3. I'd get the access denied 0xC0000022 error and with slui 4 I get the same with no activation id.

Here's a log that NoelDP asked for:

It does look like your problem is identical to the other - and LicensingDiag is its usual useless self in terms of diagnostics :(

We'll use the same initial diagnostics...
Please post the Application and System Event Logs...

Please open Event Viewer

In the left pane, navigate to the Windows Logs

right-click on Applications and select 'Save all events as...' save as Apps.evtx

repeat for the System logs - save as Sys.evtx

Compress both files, and attach to your reply.

Please follow the instructions below (written for Windows 7, so may need a little adjustment!)

Open Windows Explorer (Computer)
Navigate to the C:\Windows folder

Find the System32 sub-folder and right-click on it
select Properties

Clear the 'blob' from the 'Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)' box by clicking on it until it's plain white.
Click on Apply.
Make sure that the radio button for 'Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files' is set, and click OK.
Accept the Administrator prompt.
After a couple of seconds, you'll be told there is an error - click on the 'Ignore all' button.
Wait for it to finish - it could take a couple of minutes.
OK out, and exit Windows Explorer.

Reboot twice

I've attached the logs you asked for. Also wanted to note I tried running windows update to see if maybe it would correct the problem. It downloaded and installed all the updates I rebooted and during loading it was configuring the updates. It got to 98% then said failed to configure and reverted the updates.

Your logs look very similar to the way mine did in my VM - the same WU errors as well.

Still nothing. I couldn't remove the blob on read only without taking ownership first. So I did that then changed the blob and rebooted twice, didn't work. So I went through the steps again and after removing the blob I restored ownership back to trustedinstaller and still had no luck. :(

Also noticed that after rebooting it goes back to read only.

UPDATE: It looks like the issue lies within the Software Protection service and it not wanting to start. I've gone and checked it's dependencies and they are all running. I opened task manager and went to the services tab, scrolled down to the Software Protection service and then tried to activate while watching the service to see if it actually starts and it never does. It keeps trying and failing real quick going from starting to stop several times within a few seconds before i get the 0XC0000022 error. Any ideas why this service doesn't want to start with a access denied message? I also tried starting it manual and it gave me the same error about access.

There should have been no need whatever to take ownership - Read-only is an attribute, and not a filespec. (I did say you'd get an error and to use the 'ignore all' button!)

Please run the following commands and post the results.

ICACLS C:\Windows
ICACLS C:\Windows\System32
ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\catroot2
ICACLS C:\Windows\System32\spp\store\data.dat

You appear to have given 'Everyone' full access to the System32 folder and its content.
That opens the system wide to malware of the most basic kind.
Who did you make as 'Owner'?
You may find that the only easy way back now is a refresh - I'll ask someone to lend a hand.

I made myself owner while setting the read only and then restored ownership back to 'trustedinstaller'

The problem is that not all files are owned by TrustedInstaller - and Everyone should NOT be assigned permissions at all (at least for most files).

Well I've previously tried to refresh my PC and didn't have any luck either. Might just break down and start fresh.

Also I only changed the owner so I'm not sure how everyone got permissions

Yes! I would also do that in this situation.

And don't mess with the permissions next time system32 is the system's. :)
When I messed with the permissions the first time... long story, all was a mess so I started fresh and I kept it that way as long as possible.

Good luck
