I've seen this behavior when windows is in the middle of an update....give it some time and then try again. I left win8 running overnight after the first install.

Just a question since were talking about activation and updates. This is my first time tinkering with a dev build and I was wondering if I will have to rip it all out and buy the OS when it's finally released or will the dev build continue to function, receive updates and be valid?

Yes the Developer Preview will expire/deactivate as Microsoft makes these builds to automatically expire after a certain period of time most likely when the beta version comes out as you will most likely have to uninstall this version to install the beta which will in turn expire in an allotted time. A good example I remember was when Office 2010 beta was released and was usable and fully functional for one year after which it just quit working.

    Same here, Aaron.

I expect I'll be updating anyway as the beta is released and then the RC and then the RTM and then the final release.
