Installing this not only failed, but gave me a black screen at reboot. This is the first time when seeing the update install screen say it failed and would uninstall the update. I tried rebooting several times and still, the black screen. My keyboard lights don't light up either. After resetting the comp a few times, finally, the screen lit up.

Don't know what the issue is. This is the first time this has happened. Has anyone else installed this yet?

I installed it and now my computer won't start. It goes into repair. I'm trying to roll it back to an earlier date and it just started a hard drive disk check which it said would take at least an hour. Black screen with a blue window icon on it at the moment. Worked great until I restarted after that particular update.

It's a rather large file for a simple update. Don't know what it's about, but I was lucky that my comp recovered. Hope yours recovers as well. Really hope MS didn't issue a bugged update that'll bork computers.

Did you do anything in particular to get it to work?

Not really. After hitting the power button and starting it back up multiple times didn't work, I hit the reset button a few times. First couple of times, still got the black screen. The next time, the log in screen finally popped up. I've no idea what happened. It's not as if I'm running any third party programs start menu programs or anything like that.

I can confirm that this update failed to configure on my machine as well. Reboot to black screen, and my computer also had a very tough time going through the regular startup process...

Unplugging my machine from power for a few minutes seemed to alleviate the issue and I was able to boot normally. Windows reverted the changes and I was able to resume normal function.

The reason that it's a large update is simple - it's a Cumulative update containing more than a single patch.
Windows 8 will not have Service Packs, but will have Cumulative Updates in much the same manner as IE did/does.
This is the second such update - the first was actually released before launch!

I tried everything you all tried, nothing worked. I then put my Windows 8 Pro DVD in and did a refresh, but I haven't reinstalled that particular update yet.

I posted this issue, which I too have, on the microsoft forum. I got a quick response from a microsoft pro who suggested several ways to get the fouled up update to install, but none of them worked for me. Now have some 7 update failed in update history for this particular cummulative update.
Solutions include the usual clean boot type. The only one that gave me confidence was the troubleshooting one, but ultimately the update acted in the very same way: downloaded the update, indicated install underway, reboot required comes up, reboot initiated, reboot commences, then suddenly a short screen "restarting" shows up and an auto reboot follows, back into windows 8 64bit and update failed shows up in update history.
Hope you post your solution to this update problem, the very first problem I've had with this now three week old new installation of windows 8.

I have just updated with this Update, try uninstalling third party security (if any installed) and do the update, it might work.
