Microsoft Sales exec promises 100,000 Windows 8 apps by January 2013

Can Microsoft really add 97,000 apps to the Windows Store between now and January 2013? Or is someone in Redmond doing some funny figuring?

As of last week, there were an estimated 3,000-plus Windows Store style (Metro-Style) apps in the app store that Microsoft has built for Windows 8 and Windows RT. That same week, a Microsoft sales vice president told Beet.tv that Microsoft will have 100,000 apps for Windows 8 within 90 days after the operating system launches, which is October 25.

Microsoft may be able to gather a huge number of apps by developers on a global basis, and many are duplicative, such as "todos" or "clock tiles" or "youtubes," weather, card games, calculators, news, radio etc... Even if they approach that number (100,000), the store will filter apps by region / location / language preference. So, ... will anyone be seeing a huge increase in apps in their Windows Store? Probably not. What does it matter, really. Metro-Style Apps with great features that take advantage of the new UI, with snapping and thumbnail multitasking would be nice. Apps that have better access to the explorer file system and file types would be helpful. What will the fate of app development be in January 2014?

Hi there
C'mon guys -- who needs this type of Horse ShXXXE -- PC's aren't mobile phones -- and even if they were who on earth would even THINK of searching through zillions of dubious apps in any case.

The whole idea of marketing apps like say on Android isn't how Windows works.

So far from what I've seen of Windows Apps from the "Store" are absolute rubbish -- might be OK on a smartphone or even a tablet -- but on a serious laptop do you really need to know what the weather is in Costa Rica (sorry if you are from that great country BTW) or the bus timetable in Lima --- that's what Smart phones are for -- and most of the apps I've seen aren't even as sensible as the two I've mentioned here.

Honestly the only decent app I've ever found from these types of stores is the "Flashlight one" which allows you to use your smartphone's camera flash as a flashlight.

Cheers
jimbo

The PC market needs a stimulus to stay relevant. So ok, multi resizable windows are not a part of metro, so therefore, Windows 8 is bogus. The desktop is fully functional, but no start menu, so Windows 8 is bogus. What's wrong with adding spice to the product to enhance sales? What is a proper desktop? What is a proper OS? The app store, and the thousands of apps that will be developed and improved over time will generate interest with the public. The serious desktop professional in suits holding their laptops while riding a train would have little use for apps in general, but lots of younger people and others that like something different will be attracted to Metro Style Apps. There is no such thing as a proper desktop or OS. What works for the user is what is proper. Filters and sections will be the organization in the apps store.

"Throw-away" Items

Smart Phones and Tablets are "throw-away" items.

It seems like people ditch their phones after a year's usage.
I guess those type of people repurchase all of the Apps again too. ;)

Very well stated, mdmd. I think more people should look at it from a business point of view. Let's see, Apple and Google are raking in millions on apps. Let's ignore that market?!! Some may think it to be feces, but it's a market to be sought after.

The market designates change. Yes, a company introduces an app, program, device, UI, etc, but if consumers don't buy, it don't fly.

Technology -> Market -> Change. The new MS -> Like it or leave it. There's still a choice.

Think big? My father thought small business wise. He stayed small. He made a decent income through the years, but his competitor in town made millions.

I have to call BS on this. It sounds like Ballmer's claim of 400 million users will be on between Windows 8 PCs and Windows Phones will be running in a year...

Mathematically, it's a stretch. It'd take a bit over 1,100 apps PER day for 90 days straight to get to that goal or at least close.

Hello all :)
Honestly, it matters to me little - whether 100,000 Windows 8 apps are released or not. The number of true utility apps is what matters. Just for example - Google Play has 600,000 (If I'm wrong, please correct) but I use only about 9-10 apps. Whatsapp is the most used one on my Android. Then there is the EF app. Hotmail for mailing. Cricbuzz for keeping an eye on what is happening in the world of cricket and live scores. There are couple of browsers. Flashlight for using the camera flash as torch. An app for downloading youtube videos. Winamp for music. Thats roughly all that is installed in my Android. So, it doesn't matter to me much whether there are 1000 apps out there or 599,990 apps !!! I would be amazed if I ever need even 50 apps from the 599,990 remaining apps. ;)

However, what I'm interested in is - the functionality and prices of apps released by big Software developers such as Adobe.

I think the ONLY mathematical possibility they have for reaching that goal is IF Windows 8 will in fact be able to run Windows Phone 7 apps, which I assume most of which need recoding to fit larger screens and the Charms bar. Doing so, that's a good 100,000 apps.

WP7 apps will add to it, I have a couple of apps on Windows 8 that I also have on the phone. Outside of WP7 apps it won't be difficult for developers to port over iPad or Android apps so 100,000 apps is not impossible in that time frame. Whether it will happen is the question.
