EU investigation of Microsoft over browser choice moves forward

Antitrust regulators are said to be moving ahead in investigating Microsoft's failure to provide a browser choice screen on PCs in the EU.

Bloomberg is reporting European Union antitrust regulators are moving ahead with their investigation of Microsoft's failure to fulfill its obligation to provide users with Web-browser choice.

Bloomberg cited in a September 18 report "two people familiar with the matter" claiming that the EU is preparing a formal complaint.

Thanks, Brink.

I remember 50 years ago as a kid going to a private parochial school and the Govenor of the state of Illinois got a law passed that shut down public school bussing to private schools. The next day the Cardinal in charge made a statement that all the Catholic grammar and high schools will be closing -> They still buss private school students to this day.

I have no choice of browser on a Mac or my phone.

Reganomics....not cool. MS should sell OSs to EU customers without IE and no other option to install a browser. In fact, rip all the networking out of the OS. That'll fix them.

I like to read the comments after the article as well. I like what this guy or gal has to say....

Freedom

No, deathjazz68, we'd rather have freedom. If you're from the EU, you wouldn't know what that is. Freedom means that a company offers products for sale in whatever form they desire, and consumers either choose to buy them or not. The notion that it is a proper function of government to take companies that have achieved so much success that virtually everyone wants their products (to which they incorrectly attach the term "monopoly") and start punishing them for not making their products the way their competitors would want them to is the same sort of typical anti-capitalist, anti-freedom hogwash that we expect from the same EU that wants us to bail out all their corrupt Socialist economies.

Yes, the US has anti-trust laws, and they should be repealed, but there has at least been a morsel of reason applied in the Microsoft case and we don't have ridiculous things like forced browser choice being imposed on us.

I read that one also.

Ok, so let me get this right, The EU stated that bundling IE with the OS was anti-trust and anti-cpmpetitive
But not giving a choice is also?

If I were MS, I would put the ability to choose a browser in a dll that could only be accessed by some crazy command line
but not have it pop up automatically. or have it pop once and if you decline then you have to use command line to get to it.

EU nanny state on steroids.

And they decided to do this Before the OS was released, not really knowing how it was going to work. They seemed to have based this decision on an incomplete CP build.

Thanks for pointing that out. It does seem as if they jumped the gun, which I now question their motive more. Is it for $$$?
