Leak from Asus shows Windows RT tablet to be $600

If, like me, you thought Microsoft would price Windows RT competitively, you were wrong: A leaked slide from Asus says that its Vivo Tab RT, due to be released alongside Windows RT at the end of October, will start at $600. Unbelievably, this is $100 more than the iPad 3, and a full $200 more than the iPad 2 or Galaxy Tab 2 10.1.

They might have slightly cheaper ones as well.

Or other oem's might.

How much cheaper is hard to tell.

Not easy to do.

They have to produce something decent - Apple has great gear at $400 and $500 , google has unbelievable quality at $200.

Quite difficult for the oem's to fit in there - more so as they have to pay the license as well.

$600 for an RT? I don't think so Tim. Not that I wanted an RT in the first place, but it makes me wonder what the 8 Pro devices will cost. :(

After a lot of negativity towards Windows 8 these prices might just push a whole lot of people, me included very far away. The prices mentioned will definitely see me move away from Windows 8.

It won't necessarily push me away from Windows, but at those prices I don't see me buying a Windows Tablet anytime soon. I'll just buy a nice laptop instead. Then I can downgrade to windows 7 if I want. Although some would call that an upgrade. ;)

MS is going to have a hard time rolling into the tablet market at a price premium. I thought MS would try to position RT tablets at lower price point than Ipad and Android tablets. Interesting.

Also, how many people are going to spend 800 dollars on an RT tablet then find out it will not run 'legacy' desktop apps. I suspect a metric ass ton.

No kidding. At that price point you could get an Utlrabook or a high end laptop.

I wouldn't necessarily have to spend that much just to get a decent laptop. A 15 inch or even 17 inch screen, even if it isn't a touch screen, is starting to look real appealing. As much as I'd like to have a (non RT) tablet or slate, at those prices it isn't in my budget. I'm sure some people will buy into them though. Hopefully they do their research so they don't end up buying an RT only to find out its not what they thought it was.

There is the kindle fire HD at $200, the Google Nexus 7 at $200 and there are Windows tablets at $600? With that price I see no hope for Windows 8 on mobile devices. What we have now is a Windows on the desktop computer or laptop with a tablet surface that no one needs on a desktop.

Yeah at $800 I won't even consider the use of a Surface tablet. I'm not sure I would have paid that much for a pro version, but certainly NOT for an RT.

I'm sure that lots will be taken thinking they can run all of their old apps. I would bet that employees at stores won't be sure to tell them just how limited/non-existant that 3rd party app support is going to be.

I'm wondering if its going to be a pain just installing the software for say a wireless printer on an RT? Is that classified as a desktop app? Are you going to have to wait for special Windows RT drivers? I'm thinking Yes. Just another reason why I won't be standing in line and pay to be one of the first Ginny pigs to test drive one. Don't get me wrong, it sounds like a nice device, a bit pricy maybe, but there are too many uncertainties yet for me to even think of buying one.

I think that's a stupidly high price. Unless if it has 64 gigs of storage, it'd make more sense. But that's too high for an RT tablet. Then a 1,000 dollars for an Atom based tablet? Yoy! I have a suspicion this might not be correct as ASUS has a Windows 7 based tablet that has an i5 processor and I think a dock and it costs about a thousand dollars....
