Thanks for the heads up, Brink.

Is this on the desktop version as well?

I always thought it was a bunch of bull integrating flash directly into IE10. MS promised security, and can't deliver. I also don't believe there is a way to completely remove flash, though it can be disabled.

Give them time. After all, it is beta until final release in October. There must be a good reason why they intergraded it. MS is not the stupid evil empire some make them out to be.

Adobe admits Flash exploits threaten Windows 8

Microsoft's Windows 8 is vulnerable to attack by exploits that hackers have been aiming at PCs for several weeks, Adobe confirmed Friday.

Microsoft said it will not patch the bug in Flash Player until what it called "GA," for "general availability." That would be October 26, when Windows 8 hits retail and PCs powered by the new operating system go on sale. (See other Windows 8 news.)

"We will update Flash in Windows 8 via Windows Update as needed," a spokeswoman said in a reply to questions. "The current version of Flash in the Windows 8 RTM build does not have the latest fix, but we will have a security update coming through Windows Update in the GA timeframe."

Microsoft, not Adobe, is responsible for patching Flash Player in Windows 8 because the company took a page from Google's playbook and integrated the popular media software with Internet Explorer 10 (IE10), the new operating system's browser. Microsoft announced that move in late May when it launched the last public sneak-peak of Windows 8, or "Release Preview."

At the time, Dean Hachamovitch, the company's lead executive for IE, said, "By updating Flash through Windows Update, like IE, we make security more convenient for customers."

Thank you for the update Brink.

I'll be disabling Flash and installing Foxfire for the time being. A logical course to take to me.

    That's basically it.
I'm not waiting months for Microsoft to patch what Adobe has patched already. Here is how to get rid of the flawy flash version:

1) gpedit.msc
Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Windows Components-->Internet Explorer-->Security Features-->Add-on Management
Set "Turn off Adobe Flash in Internet Explorer and prevent applications from using Internet Explorer technology to instantiate Flash objects" to Enable.

2) gpedit.msc
User Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Windows Components-->Internet Explorer-->Security Features-->Add-on Management
Set "Turn off Adobe Flash in Internet Explorer and prevent applications from using Internet Explorer technology to instantiate Flash objects" to Enable.

This policy setting turns off Adobe Flash in Internet Explorer and prevents applications from using Internet Explorer technology to instantiate Flash objects.
Why this and not just disable the plugin in Internet Explorer:

However, if Adobe Flash is disabled through the "Add-on List" and "Deny all add-ons unless specifically allowed in the Add-on List" policy settings and not through this policy setting, all applications that use Internet Explorer technology to instantiate Flash object can still do so.

policy.PNG

(3) (Optional)
Backup %windir%\System32\Macromed\Flash

4) Open Command Prompt as administrator
navigate to %windir%\System32\Macromed\Flash
regsvr32 /u Flash.ocx
regsvr32 /u FlashUtil_ActiveX.dll

5) Close all Internet Explorer Windows/Tabs
right click FlashUtil_ActiveX.exe > run as Administrator
Choose uninstall flash

uninstall.PNG

6) Take ownership of and delete all files in
%windir%\System32\Macromed\Flash

7) Verify that the Flash plugin is disabled in Internet Explorer

Thanks for this, I have disabled (and uninstalled) the Flash add-on.
But I found, on my W8 Pro x64 RTM system, that there was no "FlashUtil_ActiveX.dll", instead the dll was "NPSWF64_11_4_402_265.dll
I ran regsvr32 /u on this dll, which gave the desired result.

Pardon my ignorance but is there a problem using Revo Uninstaller in advanced mode to remove Flash Player? Revo also removes all registry entries and cleans up any left over program fragments not removed by the Adobe uninstaller ... including add ons in IE10.

This is the latest version. You can check your flash plugin version here. If you find the NPSWF64_11_4_402_265.dll in %windir%\System32\Macromed\Flash you probably won't have to uninstall Flash.
I don't think this is the version that is shipped with Windows 8 RTM. Perhaps you have updated Flash somehow.

A patched flash version for browsers other than Internet Explorer can be downloaded here.

I think NPSWF64_11_4_402_265.dll is for FF or other browsers. I have FF and updated on 8/22.

I agree with Jim.

After removing NPSWF64_11_4_402_265.dll, Waterfox and Chromium complained about missing plugin.
Most of the other files belonged to ie10 and the report said 11.3.300 or something, so this one is out of date.
