Microsoft reveals Windows 8 upgrade pricing for the UK

Microsoft has confirmed the cost of upgrading a PC to Windows 8 - and that people who have bought a Windows 7 machine recently will get a discount.

Microsoft has confirmed the price most UK users will need to pay to upgrade to Windows 8 — £24.99.

The cost of the UK upgrade, which allows users to download a copy of Windows 8 Pro, is pegged at an almost identical level to the US, where an upgrade will set consumers back $39.99.

I was expecting a straight dollar to pound, i.e. £39.99

Interesting MS have done that.

I suppose they already annnounced the us $39.99 - so it would look like they were panicking if they dropped it.

What they can do is try and keep the price as low as possible elsewhere.

I am going to take a guess it might be £99.

It's already been posted.

They may have done it for less given the very poor reception - but since they had already announced $39.99 for US - they can't go back on that.

What they can do is try to keep it as low as possible elsewhere - without appearing to contradict the US price.

UK people will know what I mean.

This is for devices bought within a certain time-frame close to Win8's release, yes? How much is a bog-standard Win8 SKU upgrade disk?

Hi there
that's probably good news for UK upgraders - around 25 GBP.

My usual experience in the UK when buying stuff originating from the USA (Books in particular -= especially Market (stock) trading -- nearly all these come from the USA) is that you pay in GBP what the price is in USD.

Even allowing for shipping costs (quite cheap these days) there certainly shouldn't be a 1 USD : 1 GBP ratio these days (remembering also that BOOKS etc (and educational material which certainly can include Computer software) doesn't carry any Import or V.A.T in GB so taxes aren't an excuse either.

Incidentally UK users - if you download purchased software say from Adobe or else where - often it comes from Republic of Ireland (Eire) where they charge you often a wallet busting 21% VAT. You CAN get this back -- it's a bit of a hassle but YOU CAN claim it back -- you don't have to be a non UK resident either. It's a bit time consuming but if you are buying something like Photoshop then the VAT refund IMO is worth it. - Claim it back as "Educational" / "Study" or "Course Material". This type of software will always be approved for this type of exemption by an individual - not say 100 licenses for an organisation - that's different. !!

Cheers

Hi Jimbo,

But we pay 23% IVA here....!

Which is reflected in Amazon prices charged which are slightly different to the ones displayed....

Never mind - beer & wine are cheap!

Hi there
that's good about beer and wine. !!

However in the UK the software is ZERO rated (0%) if it's for educational purposes as outlined above - that's why I suggest if DOWNLOADING from say Eire they should claim the VAT charged back. Books, magazines and newspapers aren't taxed either so there should be very little difference between UK and US prices for these type of goods -- it's often HUGE without justification looking at the GBP ==> USD exchange rate for the past several months. Around 1.60 - 1.65 USD for 1 GBP.

Not sure what the law is in Portugal over this but if there is a Tax Free "Educational" software import scheme then I should go for it.

Cheers

Well I am confused...Amazon.co.uk are offering pre-order Win8 Pro Upgrade for £49.99, but PC World have a product description which says Full Edition for £49.99. Also Amazon have other listings for Win8 Pro N Upgrade but they are £189.99!!

As a consumer I am really puzzled by all these different prices flying around.

All I want is a DVD with a full edition that I can pop into any machine that may I build in the future...why is it so hard to find a price that is correct? Seems like all the product information is getting jumbled up somewhere ?

Hi there
looks like my first post in this thread was correct -- seems UK consumers getting ripped off again with a 1 USD : 1 GBP price ratio.

This often seems the case I notice when I'm in the UK.

Price if USD is 49 USD should be about 30 GBP (Max) not 49. !!!

Cheers

It is very confusing.

I think this is how it goes:

1. There is an offer if you bought a new pc with win7 on it since June this year ($14.99).

2. There is a different offer for anyone with a qualifying version of windows - that means just about everyone - for a limited time - the download version will be $39.99, the dvd version will be $69.99

They seem to be indicated as upgrade versions - but there appears to be some uncertainty because pre order versions of the $69.99 (uk price £49.99) on some web sites have been apparently confirmed as full retail versions.

Who knows?
