Windows 8 Pro to be priced at $199 following $69.99 promotion pricing

Microsoft's Windows 8 Pro software will be priced at $199 after a promotional price of $69.99 expires on January 31st 2013, according to one source familiar with Microsoft's plans.

The software maker will also offer a Windows 8 to Windows 8 Pro upgrade option at retail stores for $69.99 until January 31st when the price reverts to $99.99.

Microsoft previously announced its $39.99 Windows 8 Pro upgrade pricing for existing Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 users — a price available exclusively online for those wishing to download the software without a DVD option.

Retailers will stock a $69.99 Windows 8 Pro option in stores, one that may be offered as a traditional full version of Windows for those without a previous copy.

Both the Windows 8 to Windows 8 Pro and Windows 8 Pro copies will be made available from retailers on October 26th.

That doesn't make any sense.

They said they are not going to have a retail "full version" product.

$199 for an upgrade only product is INSANE.

Or maybe that is the "System Builder" version? If so $199 is INSANE!

$199 can ONLY be a full, non upgrade, non-system builder, non-oem price. But... they said they were not going to sell such a version ?!?

All a bit opaque atm.

Better wait for an official announcement.

I was expecting the price to be lower in real terms than 7 was , and considerably lower in real terms than Vista was.

Of course, you have to buy media centre separately- but it is the headline price that sticks in people's minds.

The $199 product described said it would be for computers without a previous copy of Windows...so it's not an upgrade only version.

The pro version, in a retail type style, at $199 wouldn't be unheard of at all for a Windows product. That's completely in line with XP, Vista and 7.

Well it's strange that they said they weren't going to sell that version at all...

And it is disappointing after all the "lower cost" talk. That IS right in line with 7 :(

So system builder home lic. likely to be about $90 and Pro at $140 or whatever like normal then?

Fseal, unsure. All of the "lower cost" talk really was for a promotional period of time, until end of Jan. I think people just got it stuck in their heads that the cost was going to be really low. And I think with the reaction many have with Windows 8, they heard the $39 price tag and thought...well they have to make it cheap enough and it became engrained that it was going to be a cheap product.

From what I read about the Personal Use System Builder license, unlike OEM, it could be moved to a new PC as long as it was no longer being used on the original PC. So, it appears there are going to be some changes.

I guess keeping the prices the same shouldn't be a surprise, but with them now getting 30% of all app store sales AND a /huge/ new advertising platform, they are really taking everyone for everything they have this time around. Advertisers, developers and users!

There are so many errors in that report I give it zero credit. When MS announced their $39.99 download Upgrade price, they stated you could get a DVD copy for a $15 fee and also the Upgrade version would be available in stores for $69.99. Now this idiot blogger is saying its a Full Retail version for $69.99. Just another case of an idiot wanting to be the first one to report a false rumor.

Nice one!

That's what tons of people do and they don't say it...

I remember a while back, at Media Markt here in Belgium, a legal DVD of Win7 Ultimate was 400 Euro!
That's NOT a promotion in any case, and I'm sure not many will buy it at such a price.

A student promotion was 70 Euro for the Proffesional version... that's a big difference and I don't need Ultimate.

Cheers
Hopachi

70 dollars for a custom install until January? Ok! I can do that!

The rumor was that you could basically clean install the 40 dollar upgrade pro version from the RP without having to reinstall Windows 7. If you add in the 12 bucks for WMC you get it all for 52 dollars.

I was under the impression it was Oct 26th.

Maybe that is when it is on sale to the general public.

I think the $40 upgrade includes media centre.

It is a good deal - MS are doing exactly what they need to - they would have a hard job selling it without that opener.

I bought a new laptop last week and just registered it on M$ Upgrade Offer website which gives me a download copy of Windows 8 Pro for $14.99AU. Perfect! I only want 1 copy to run on my laptop before I decide whether or not to run it on my main rigs.

Details

I just got an email saying that on Oct 26 they will email a promo code I can then enter, pay $14.99 and start downloading. The email also says I need to be on the computer I want to upgrade when I start the upgrade order

Some OEMs are offering reimbursements on the upgrade to Windows 8, like HP for example, has a new advert with their laptop with Beats Audio and at the end it mentioned that.

im confused on this can anyone shed light on the subject?

if you had the RP installed or install the RTM version how much will it cost to activate windows 8?

can you just install the RTM that is circleing around and just pay the activation? if so, how much?
