Microsoft's SkyDrive storage service gets a facelift

SkyDrive, Microsoft's cloud storage service, has gotten a 'more modern' make-over.

Microsoft officials took the wraps off the latest update to SkyDrive on August 14, the day before Microsoft is set to start rolling out the official Windows 8 RTM bits to developers, IT pros and volume licensees. The changes to SkyDrive.com were detailed in a post on the new "Inside Skydrive" blog.

In addition to a new user interface for SkyDrive.com, Microsoft also has made bug fixes to Windows and Mac OS X Skydrive client apps, and is introducing a new SkyDrive for Android phone app that will be coming in "just a few weeks." The new SkyDrive.com will roll out over the next 24 hours, officials said.

Great, they painted the outside and still don't have deleted file recovery, no bandwidth throttle options and still limited to synchronizing a single folder on the root of your hard drive.

Brink,
I went to my Host OS, Win 7, accessed Skydrive. Still the same old skydrive.
I then went to Guest OS, Win 8 RP, where I have installed Windows Live Essentials 2012, accessed my Skydrive. Also the same old skydrive.
What gives ?
someone is pulling my legs ?

Ok, I opened my Win 8 RP, went to the link I found, click the download. Gues what I got this message.....

It finds a " newer " skydrive version in my system ?

I aborted the install.
I don't have the foggiest what is going on.

It is getting screwy..... ha ha ha.
I went to Host OS, Win 7, and installed the new Skydrive. It went through no problem.
A skydrive file is in my computer and when I click it, the new look of Skydrive is present.
New Skydrive file in computer.png
I also have a skydrive shortcut created on the desktop long time ago. If I click that shortcut, I am looking at the old skydrive look.

Twilight zone, alternative dimension.......

Ok. I've got it.
The reason it says I have the newer version is because I have installed WLEssentials 2012, which unbeknown to me, includes the new Skydrive. ( The older WLE version does not include skydrive. Right ? ).
In short, I already have the new skydrive. No need to install from the link.

Like t-4-2, I figured out the new SkyDrive was from downloading WE 2012, but this is only because I coincidentally downloaded it two days ago and saw it.

As far as sharing notebooks to SkyDrive from OneNote, it's the most convoluted process. In fact, it's so convoluted I can't figure out how to do it yet. I'm connected to SkyDrive via OneNote, logged into SkyDrive online.

What has this company turned into? This is ridiculous.

Never mind, I got it. But MS is going backwards with their new stuff, really ticked off. And like pparks1 said, you can only upload one file at a time. Man of man. I don't know if this changes if you upgrade from their free service, but why would I pay these people for this service when what they're doing what they're doing with their software?

I also may be considering expanding my SkyDrive storage, 50 dollars a year for 100 gigs of third party, non-partisan storage sounds tempting....

That's right, looks over functionality. Pure awesome!

  • No support for Windows XP.
  • No recycle bin support.
  • No bandwidth throttling. (absolutely necessary in a business or shared home environment)
  • No Linux support ( I know most people here won't care)
  • Cannot upload a folder via the web application...only files.
  • No thanks...not right now.

I really want to use SkyDrive, I really do. It's the most free storage that I get (25GB), but I just cannot use it. Not being able to recover a file accidentally deleted, either from the web, or from my SkyDrive folder locally being instantly replicated to the cloud or to the computer is just not acceptable. And without having folder upload support in the web app, using it as a pure web backup location is a no-go as well.

You kind of need to set up a file structure within Windows first. Or, you can set one up within SkyDrive. It's a tad tedious, but the overall arching point is the fact that files are accessible from your SkyDrive are available on any other PC you use. Or better yet, you can have YOUR PC and its contents as your SkyDrive of sorts.

But in one fell swoop, I can copy some folders from my Libraries over to the SkyDrive directory and have it upload the way I left the folder structure as.

I said "Upload files", not folders.
Create a folder (named folder1) in Skydrive > Open C:\folder1 > select files > drag and drop files to Skydrive folder1
Create sub-folder under folder1 in skydrive > open sub-folder in C:\folder1 > drag and drop files to skydrive sub-folder

t-4-2, that's via the computer not the website.

Figured out how to do it from the browser, hold CTRL and select multiple folders and it uploads them - but only if they're less than 300MB. If they're more it won't (if you're using the free storage, which I am. I guess the limitation is raised with the paid storage?) Otherwise you have to load everything up via your PC.

By the way, the "Share" option in the various Office file pages are incredibly misleading, maybe useless. If they are useful it is designed horribly because I cannot find a way to upload files via "File" to SkyDrive, and the implication is that you can.

Skydrive only gives you 25 GB storage if you have enabled the 25 GB option a while back. Otherwise you get only 7 GB as a new skydrive member.
Better check if your total picture size does not exceed the limit, particularly if you pictures are in png or bmp formats.
I understand you can buy more storage space.

P.S. you can drag and drop a bunch of files at one time.... click at one of the files > press Ctrl key and HOLD > click the next file, and the next, and so on while you are HOLDING the Ctrl key > release Hold > drag/drop those to the skydrive folder.

Yes, it will take some time finish uploading.
