Microsoft: Don't call it Metro. Call it 'Windows 8'

After a seeming naming dispute with a European partner (cough... Metro Group... cough), Microsoft has decided to switch rather than fight over the name of its Metro design language.

The new substitute terminology upon which the Softies have decided is -- drum roll -- "Windows 8," according to my sources.

Here's the official guidance, my sources say: Anything currently/formerly known as a "Metro-Style application" (with or without a hyphen) will now be known officially as a "Windows 8 application." References to the "Metro user interface" will now be replaced by "Windows 8 user interface." And instead of saying "Metro design," the Softies and those adhering to their official guidelines will be using the words "Windows 8 design."

Just what MS needs ... a brand recognition problem.

What's going to happen when they come out with Win9? The front end is going to be called "Windows 8"?

But I would imagine that they would go after basically everyone that is using the term "metro" in their company or product name. Metro design isn't a product, it's a design philosophy/concept. You can't actually buy it or manufacture it.

It's just ridiculous. Totally ridiculous. Dropping the Metro naming because of a potential dispute... Microsoft cared less in the past. There's a lot more here that meets the eye, we just have no idea what the hell is going on.

I heard someone suggest that Microsoft should just call it "Metropolitan". Or how about Microsoft "Metropolis"?

Whatever!

Their marketing and legal departments really snoozed through this one :/

It's a surprisingly big loss. The "Windows" name is so tired now... SO tired. They needed something like the "Metro" name to charge up their advertising. I mean the interface isn't even Windows any more /at all/. It NEEDS a new name. Calling the tablet and phone "Windows 8" is just going to cause people to snore right though the entire launch. :/

The first time I tried to use it, I thought of a word to call it. I can't tell you what it was because I can't use that kind of language here.

My coworker just asked a good question.

"What are they going to do when they release Windows 9, are they going to continue to call the Start screen and the full screen apps, Windows 8?"

It is a rather serious problem they have to sort out, or else all the power they gathered into immersing WP with Metro and web services (UI-wise) will be pretty much for nothing.
