Microsoft may release Office 2013 public preview today

Steve Ballmer and top Office exec Kurt DelBene will kick off Microsoft's Worldwide Partners Conference

By Gregg Keizer | Computerworld

Microsoft may announce the first public preview of Office 2013, the likely name for its next productivity suite, at its annual gathering with partners later today.

Although Microsoft has not publicly revealed its plans for Office 2013 -- which has been codenamed "Office 15" -- other than to say that a public beta would be rolled out "later this summer," there are clues that the company will unveil a sneak peek today.

LOL, Coke! You're not too excited are you?!!

I'm still using Office 2000 Pro on my 7, which runs fine, but a bit of a security vulnerabily. I downloaded Open Office in 8, which seems to work fine. I'll use the Office 2013 PP for awhile when released. Then we'll see about the price of final release for Office has gotten to be pricey.

Hi there
What can it possibly offer more than Office 2010 apart from yet more "Cloud Cuckoo Land" stuff.

It might also "Offer" Licensing by Seat" -- an insidious mega expensive way of suckering users into ponying up HUGE amounts of money - compared with what they are paying for today.

Don't get suckered into this stuff --it's MORE EXPENSIVE and offers LESS than what you get today.

Cheers

LOL and funny as hell!

Hi there
Thanks !!

I think if I keep posting this sort of stuff Ms will "Take a Contract" out on me -- better get my Life Insurance sorted out. !!

Anyway the Cloud is beginning to be treated with the scepticism it deserves -- recent "Outages" at several UK Banks have finally made consumers wary of "Remote servers" managed by a total bunch of unknown and unaccountable scrobbits which the FBI and other agencies -- US or otherwise - could shut down at a moments notice --remember the NZ operation Megaupload -- even though NZ Courts said the operation was LEGAL and "Off shored" facilities such as "Cheech and Chong" messing up every other thing that hasn't already gone wrong in the first place.

Cheers

I'm looking forward to using the new metro styled UI, especially Outlook. I've seen some screenshots that look just stellar. Also, I claim myself to be a PowerPoint artist and from what I've heard, there's supposedly a new live tile theme that I want to play with along with the new themes, metro animations and slide transitions and all. Believe you me, it is a real PITA to replicate a metro animation in PowerPoint 2010, that's for sure!

Let me first state that I'm a longhair that has never trusted and never will trust my government. I'm sure you all know that the tail is a symbol of that, at least here in the states. They have always called it defiance, I've always called them wrong. Our founding fathers would roll over in their graves if they new what condition the Union is now in. I'm surprised that some of you others in the world would even want speak with us Americans with how we police the world and all!

I think if I keep posting this sort of stuff Ms will "Take a Contract" out on me -- better get my Life Insurance sorted out. !!

Worry more about our Dept of Justice here than MS. They'll probably arrest you for "standing in the way of international commerce" or some goofy stand-in-the-way-of-your-freedom-of-speech law that they came up with.

I don't trust the Cloud either. If they hacked into Zuckerberg's Facebook account to post pics they can certainly hack the Cloud. And that was a small venture just for fun! You know the horror stories.

I'll trust you to know who's keeping the store, Jimbo. Scrobbits it is then. LOL!

Megaload was shut down by $Hollywood$ that assumed guilt and has the "professional politicians" in their back pockets. They just can't seem to make that extra $mil-or- 2$ they think they need! For Lamb's sake! When is enough going to be enough?!! It was like slapping NZ in the face and saying that they have no sense of justice!

I'll get off my soap box now and going to the Chill Out Room :p

Hi there
you can get loads of legally discounted versions of Office -- students, -- just get a "chittty" from your establishment, "Use at Home" versions from your job in lots of cases etc.

Nobody really needs to pay full retail price for Office -- and once you've got it you can use it as much as you like "Commercial Free" and no limitations on its use.

I don't think Office 2013 will be so liberal with its pricing -- Ms has often said it would like to generate more revenue from its incredibly popular Office -- possibly Office is more popular than Windows itself.

Cheers

Some people can get discounts. Neither my wife nor I are students, so we don't qualify for those programs.

My company used to offer the Home Use Program (HUP), but we decided to not maintain our Enterprise Agreement at the desktop level in our organization, which eliminated our ability to get this discount any longer.

Nobody really needs to pay full retail price for Office -- and once you've got it you can use it as much as you like "Commercial Free" and no limitations on its use.
Without some of the above programs, you can still get the Home and Student version for around $125 from Amazon. If you need Outlook, you are looking at the Business version for around $190. So, it's not as if retail is absurdly priced, but I'm sure lots of people don't want to pay this much (and piracy rates of office tend to support this belief).

I'll be honest, I'm biased as I've worked for commercial software companies for my entire adult life. But I don't understand the argument that "well, they have enough as it is, I should therefore be able to just take it for free". Megaupload was shut down for hosting tons of pirated software, movies, music, etc. Why should sites like that be allowed to remain operational if they are distributing content that is expected to be purchased, and would be purchased by all other consumers who aren't taking advantage of the system. If you don't like the product or the price, don't resort to taking it for free. Instead, skip it all together, don't support the hype machine, and give the companies the time of day.

As far as Office goes, it might be available, which also means "it might not be available".

We've gotten off topic here, but I have to address this.

But I don't understand the argument that "well, they have enough as it is, I should therefore be able to just take it for free".

There was no argument and that's not what I wrote. That's quite offensive that you misquoted me. I suggest that you read it again. I'll place it here for your convenience:

Megaload was shut down by $Hollywood$ that assumed guilt and has the "professional politicians" in their back pockets. They just can't seem to make that extra $mil-or- 2$ they think they need! For Lamb's sake! When is enough going to be enough?!! It was like slapping NZ in the face and saying that they have no sense of justice!

Megaupload's owners and the like have not been found guilty as of yet. I'll admit there's piracy, but I believe it's performed mostly by teens with games, people that are monetarily struggling, and/or poor people. Quite frankly, I don't see the big Fn' deal of it all that they take it. Where's humanity?!

If you don't like the product or the price, don't resort to taking it for free.

Then you further insult me by hinting that I steal. You can search my PC HDs, Droid cards, and external drive for any illegal files. You won't find any whatsoever, save a few pics that I downloaded from a web page. You can contact the authorities.

Instead, skip it all together, don't support the hype machine, and give the companies the time of day.

Then you continue to insult by;
a) Telling me what to do. I suggest that if one wants to get along with people, one should most certainly make a suggestion rather than an order.
b) Supposing I support some kind of machine and assumed illegal companies. No comment! I don't have that much time tonight.

I usually don't jump to conclusions on character before I investigate some facts. Firstly, I checked out your profile. I see you're one of those that like to remain somewhat anonymous. Not much to learn about you other than a time zone and Win 7 as an OS. That's OK, if that's what you chose. Personally I don't see the point in it if I'm trying to be part of forum with something in common with others. And I sure hope your not one of those that got banned and trying to return. Also, I gather that your possibly a Green-lander, a Canadian, a U.S. American, Central American, or a South American according to the time zone.

Why should sites like that be allowed to remain operational if they are distributing content that is expected to be purchased, and would be purchased by all other consumers who aren't taking advantage of the system. If you don't like the product or the price, don't resort to taking it for free.

Secondly, I thought hard on your above statement. I'm pretty well read on the Megaupload case and other pending or finalized cases, especially U.S. cases, for that's one of my greater interests. I didn't realize there was a trial and a jury reached a guilty verdict as you assume. I just Binged it and all I could find was in that it's still in extradition (to the United States) hearing status and that the hearing is being delayed until March of 2013, as I already new. I'm getting old and I thought I lost a year in time! You kinda' scared me there for a minute.

Also, you're not one of those ignorant U.S. citizens that didn't learn or comprehend the U.S. constitutional civil right of due process of law, are you? If you are, that's quite a shame, for there is such a procedure if one is accused of a crime and arrested. Another right is that one is innocent until proven guilty. We also have a right to face our accusers in a legal court of law in the presents of a jury. There is much more, but that's pretty much the basics. If you're a U.S. citizen and not learned on this, I suggest you do learn it.

You came on here shooting at me with both barrels......You missed. :p

To get back (a little) on topic here, I have to agree about all the "cloud" this and "cloud" that. Seems almost every "professional" e-mail I get has the word "cloud" in the title someplace. The comments are right-on and funny to boot.

(Sorry I haven't posted in a while - lost my password and finally gave up trying to find it or figure it out again. Guess I shoulda just made it "password" so I could remember it! ;))

HippsieGypsie,

I'm sorry if you felt my post was a direct attack on you personally. My statements were meant to be more a general response to the topic as a whole. I always recommend that people skip things entirely or find open source or free alternatives rather than resorting to piracy of any measure. The use of the word "you" was not intended to be directed directly to you.

If you go back and re-read my post, and not assume that I am attacking you...i simply pose a couple of questions and make a general statement about not giving companies the time of day. I never call you names, or accuse you of being a bad person, etc.

I was really hoping to conjure up some more discussion of the topic at hand as we wait for MS office....not start a flame war.

You came on here shooting at me with both barrels......You missed. :p

I consider my post more like flicking a booger across the fence. It wasn't a serious attempt to upset anybody or anything.

Just haven't taken the time to set anything up here yet. I barely use Windows 8. I came over here from the sister site, Windows 7 Forums. I'm known on that forum, I provide quite a bit in my profile, I've posted nearly 10k times, most of the members of this forum are on that forum and they know me.

As I start to use Windows 8 and visit this site more regularly, I will add to my profile.

As far as our judicial system goes and the rights to fair trials, yes, I understand the concept. Megaupload has not been found guilty....this is true. But as you said, there is piracy. I know there is piracy. People have obviously used it for piracy.
